Blown off oil filler cap

Long time lurker- first time poster...
Posted thus in the "technical" section but got no bites.
Here's the rundown; got the first oil change @ 3000 miles. I'm at around 8800 now. Was driving to work this afternoon (about 30 miles one way) and started to notice a weird smell in the cabin. Long story short: got to work, opened the hood, oil filler cap sitting on top of the engine - oil everywhere. Checked the level, looks about at the halfway mark. What should I do now? I didn't even open the hood since the last oil change ( I know, I know... I drive a truck for a living so I know a little about maintenance, etc. just didn't see a reason for it on a brand new car that was running fine). Called the dealership... The guy at the service desk didn't even seem interested to talk to me- told me to "bring it in".
What should I expect/ ask for? Evidently it was not my fault. Even if I was to check the oil level I would use the dipstick and not fiddle with the filler cap.
What would be a "procedure" for a remedy to my issue?
Thank you in advance

Sounds like they put it on but might have left it loose

Would there really be enough crankcase pressure to blow the filler cap off? I'd be surprised.

A more likely explanation: The person who filled the oil never put the cap back on. He (or possibly she) left the cap resting right where you found it. It's an easy thing to forget.

You have every right to ask that the engine compartment be restored to its previously clean state, even if that means replacing the insulation under the hood.

A couple of questions, by 'oil everywhere' do you mean a lot or a light coating? Is the oil being blown out while the car is running? The fact that it is down 1/2 is worrying. There shouldn't have been that much loss from a cap being off. Either there is a LOT of oil splash off from the cams out the filler or there is pressure build up in the crankcase, which is bad news. You need to have that checked! I don't know for this engine but usually there is a baffle to prevent oil from splashing out if the cap is off but would allow for some oil vapor to coat the engine, but 1/2 of it being down is to me very excessive. You have the service record so you should be covered for who's responsibility it is. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I will probably get some oil and fill it back up seen halfway mark on dip stick only about half quart low, and being running with the oil filler cap off it's not going to hurt the engine.

The caps screw on pretty tight, so it really has to be a case of the oil change tech not putting the cap on properly. The dealer should clean up the engine bay, but I would also request a fresh oil change: the engine compartment is not a particularly sanitary place and there is surely dust, dirt, grit and the like passing through, some of which could have entered the engine through the oil filler. Granted, the bigger bits should have been captured by the oil filter but the smaller stuff could still be circulating.

Quick update:
I'm sitting at the dealership at the moment. They took a look under the hood, are going to clean up the engine compartment and give me the Works oil change. No arguments or problems. Evident fault from their side for not having the filler cap tightened.
I wasn't looking for freebies- just wanted them to make it right. Happy with the outcome.
I will request to have this "incident" notated in the service history for future reference- as someone here has suggested.

Thanks for the replies folks. Regards.

I had this same thing happen to me. Except the dealer never put the cap back on in the first place. I had the hood liner replaced and the cabin air filters. It stunk in the cabin prior to having these replaced.

I think I'm going to pay them a visit again. Did they just wipe the engine bay or steam clean it in your case? They didn't even mention anything about the cabin air filters; then again it doesn't smell in there anymore. I did try to have em put something about this incident on the receipt but he claimed that he already "closed that ticket". It doesnt seem like they steam cleaned my engine- just wiped it off half a**ed. Did they write something on your ticket?

How is "down 1/2" worrying or excessive when it is not clearly defined?

In any case, how could you possibly know that half of the oil is gone without adding more oil?
