In any case, how could you possibly know that half of the oil is gone without adding more oil?
I think he means half way between full and add in the cross hatched area. About 1/2 quart low.

My questions were rhetorical.
Perhaps you should be responding to the post that I was responding to.

BTW, I do agree with what you are saying (in which case it's impossible to determine how much oil was lost because any car could be 1/2 qt. low).

Yea, Misunderstood the statement to mean half oil was lost not half quart on stick. So disregard my thoughts on that. being 1/2 quart low can happen just with a new filter if they didn't run it to fill and then top off. I suspect that is what happened and they forgot to replace the cap. move along folks, nothing to see here.....LOL. To the OP, glad they are getting it taken care of.

I have had 2 dealership performed oil changes, from 2 different dealerships and they do not fill it to the full mark. It has both times been in the middle of the 2 dots on the dipstick. I asked the last dealership about this and they said it was properly filled. When looking in the owners manual it also notes that if there is oil between the 2 dots to NOT ADD OIL.

The "Do not add oil" statement is really to keep the average owner from dumping in a full quart of oil whenever the level is less than full. It's fine and good to add oil if the level is down only a bit, just don't overfill.

In your case, as the Focus' oil capacity is 4.5 quarts, I wonder if the dealers decided to save a couple bucks and only put in 4?

My dealer power-washed the entire engine bay and hood-liner initially. The HVAC system still smelled like burning oil after the power washing, so i brought it back and they replaced the hood-liner and filters. No smell since everything was replaced.
