What should I fill up with?

With the risk of bringing up all the arguing about regular vs. premium gas, I have a question.

I've had my car for about 3 weeks now and am down to half a tank (I know... I don't drive enough!). Anywho, I'm ready to give it some food and am debating giving it regular gas for the first ~1000 miles (i.e. break-in). Or should I just start now giving it premium? I wouldn't expect to see any mpg improvements using premium during break-in, but is it better/worth it for allowing the engine to operate in it's full compression/timing? Or should I just split the difference and use mid-grade for now?

If it is a new Focus with the Ti-VCT engine, I would just start running premium now. The cost per mile is the same or better than regular gas, at least that has been my experience, and the car runs better. I would also recommend Shell V-Power. I have had the best results with it, although it is usually the most expensive premium. Also check out this video. Shell Optimax has been rebranded V-Power.

When I ran my 2000 or so mile experiment with premium through the summer I noticed no difference in fuel economy in my mixed city commute. Therefore it cost more for no appreciable mileage gain, although it did possibly feel slightly smoother at least at first. (For the first 1800-2000 miles I ran 87 octane fuel, then for the next 2000 or so I ran premium before switching back now to regular.

Now I'm not opposed to spending the extra for a bit more performance, but if I'm not generally pushing it that hard most of the time it does not take too much advantage of the added anti knock properties of the fuel.

Perhaps as others have mentioned for all highway commuting it might help, but my best all highway tank so far was 42.1 mpg with a car load of people on 87 octane. 470.1 mi/11.176 gallons at 65 mph on the freeway.

Just curious, did you ever run a few tanks of Shell V-Power? The gains I experienced with any brand premium was not much if any, although the car always ran better and low speed characteristics were improved. I feel and have experienced the difference of V-Power, as demonstrated in the video, and will continue to use and recommend it. I don't work for Shell, but have come to conclusion it is good stuff.
