Mk3 Lighting Thread

Ok, let's see what we can do for a consolidated location for lighting info. Let's keep this as a 'strictly business' sort of thread, i.e.-no chit-chat or comments. If you have completed a lighting mod and have a how-to with some detailed photo's, create a new post here and try to make it as detailed as possible. If you like a mod or feel that you have information that could expand on something here, feel free to send a pm to the poster with your info, comments, or add to their reputation points if it has helped you. For posters, modify your posts as you see fit, but if one person has a question then there are probably more too...

So here is the master list of bulbs. If I have left something out, PM me and I will edit this post to reflect the new information.

Headlights
High- H1
Low- H11
Turn- W21W/7440
Marker- 168NA
Fogs- H11

Taillights
Brake- 3157
Parking- 3157
Turn- 3757NA
Reverse- 921

Interior
Hatch- 168

Mirror
Turn- 168NA
Puddle- 168

Notes- 168 and 194 bulbs are interchangeable, 194's are just a bit dimmer. Same with W21W and 7440's, with 7440's being brighter.

Edit: These bulbs can be changed by simply adjusting your mirror all the way in and then reaching in behind it with either fingers or pliers. I will leave the how-to up anyways, but I would recommend leaving your mirror on to save from the possibility of breaking one.

A few members have done this and a few have asked how to do this, so here is a quick how-to pic description of how to change your puddles and mirror turn signal lights. Both sockets are 168/194 wedge. This would be applicable to those of you who don't like the little amber dot in the signals or want to throw a different color into your puddle lamps. Or maybe you just blew a bulb?

Mirror pulled forward to expose heating wires-

Pull gently but firmly to remove mirror-

The mirror from behind, so you know you aren't breaking anything-

Inside of the housing-

Puddle lamp-

Turn signal lamp-

New look for about $5.-

I have a question, if someone has an answer feel free to pm me and then delete this post.

If I want to install HIDs I know I need an error code Eliminator, would it also be advised to buy a relay harness as well? I had to run one on my '09 be wise it was a single high/low bulb, just wondering if its needed on an mk3

For reference, this is the side marker:

In order to take them out you need to remove the headlight housing by removing these two screws (torx 30 for reference).

A close up.

The lower headlight screw:

The upper headlight screw:

Once the headlight housing is off you'll need to remove the wiring harness from the housing unit. Be careful, too much force and the retaining clip will break .

Once the headlight unit is fully removed you'll notice on the back of it 3 rubber "plugs." Simply pull them off and place them to the side. The two that need to be removed are:

This one is for the low beam light access:

This one is for the side marker light:

Once you've got the covers off this is what you'll see inside of the side marker housing:

In order to remove the side marker you'll need a longer flat-head screwdriver. Place it on the back of the bulb housing and apply pressure up and to the left (counter-clockwise & if your not in the US, anti-clockwise).

The bulb will now be loose enough to pull out. You're going to want to pull GENTLY on the wires up and then from the low bulb housing pull the plug out through it.

Remove your old bulb and place the new bulb in it. In order to make sure your bulb works you're going to need to plug the wiring harness back into the headlight unit. Do that now.

Argh. The frustrating part. Now feed the bulb back through the low bulb hole into the side marker spot. It is going to take some finagling to the bulb back in it's spot. Happy Gilmore's, "Go to your home! Are you to good for your home!?" comes to mind here.

I used two fingers in the side marker hole and two in the low bulb hole to get it in. Once in your going to use the screwdriver to apply pressure again and this time spin clockwise. Give a gentle pull on the wires to ensure that you've properly seated the bulb in its housing.

Now is a good time to replace the rubber "plugs" back in their proper place. Plug the wiring harness back in.

This part:

Is going to slide into here:

It's important that this happens or your headlight housing will not fit properly. Once in re-insert the two screws.

Here is the final results.

I'll post up pics of the lights at night. All in all this small mod took me 20 minutes to do. 10 min a side and that was with taking pictures for this write up. Happy modding!
