Called the dealership about the wind noise and the escalating whine - the service manager was abrupt with me and said "for the 600th time - the wind noise is coming from the wind hitting the mirrors." "This is the way these cars are." Unfortunately, If he had indeed told me this before, he could have saved me countless hours trying to find the source of this noise. In actuality, they had told me every time the car was in for service or other issues, that they heard nothing unusual coming from the side door/window. So, I guess they did hear the noise after all. So then I said, logically, that if that is the case - could I replace the mirrors with something else and he said no, they are aerodynamically designed and replacing them won't help with the wind/noise issues. The noise can't be helped - its the way they are. OK - Great - stuck with this noise everyday on the parkway - So then - as to the escalating, whining noise, he told me to drop off the car and someone would look at it, but then when I asked for someone to take a test drive with me, he begrudgingly agreed to an appointment for tomorrow. I asked to go on a test drive because of their previous history of not "hearing" anything - I wanted to make sure this noise was heard this time. I made the appointment - then reconsidered and canceled. I didn't like his confrontational attitude and felt like I was just annoying him - maybe I need to bring a man with me next time....

Well - I went to another dealership and got my answers - the wind noise is an issue with the Focus - we even test drove another one with the same noise - and the whirling/growling noise did turn out to be a bad rear wheel bearing - should be replaced tomorrow...

Dealerships like that first one are going to sink Ford. It's sad that they're creating an environment where you have to drive all over town getting 2nd opinions to get an obvious issue corrected.

Well - back from the shop - turned out they needed to replace both back wheel bearings... No growling coming from the rear anymore.... so much quieter. Rained today and the back of the car was so quiet that I heard the rear wipers for the first time - interestingly, a lot of the 'wind' noise seems to have gone away too.... don't know what that is all about but I'm happy !!!

Well, I was going to say that you should get a second opinion from another dealer, but it looks like you've already done that. Next time I'll finish reading the thread.

Good to hear your issues were resolved.

I wish there was some consistency between dealership attitudes, but unfortunately, there isn't.

thanks Crystal and you're right Zillon - I was beginning to despair that I would never get anyone to take me seriously - I want to wave the service receipt in front of the first service manager's nose and say "see - I wasn't just a stupid women hearing imaginary noises." gets to be a real drag.... but I'll remember when it comes time to buy again...
