Comparo: 2012 SE Hatch Stick vs 2012 SE Sedan DCT

So my hatch is in the shop for some factory paint defects (hopefully they fixed them right) so they gave me a loaner, a blue SE sedan with the Sport Package and DCT.

I was actually quite excited to drive the car more than just a test drive.

Positives:

* DCT responds fairly well once you are going
* DCT feels like a clutch car...love it, I think that is great
* I actually kind of like the thumb shift on the stick, and the reason why...I think Ford tried to mimic taking your hand off the wheel and change the gears "manually" like a stick shift...kind of like it...however would take a paddle over it
* It had alloy wheels instead of my steel wheels
* The HD screen upgrade you get with sync is a nice touch
* 16" sport alloys are actually quite good looking

Negatives:

* DCT SUCKS taking off...it lags throttle response like crazy
* Suspension is WAY too soft to my liking even though my hatch does not have the "sport package"
* On the same interstate back from the dealership to home 70 miles, I got 31mpg compare to my stick 35mpg (loaner had 11K and I have 1K miles...so well broken in on their part)
* Trunk space is nothing compared to my hatch

Biggest let down is the DCT not returning more MPG compared to my car on the same stretch of highway....however I was actually really surprised how well the transmission responded ONCE you got moving..from a stand still it is a lot to be desired still. I think and hope someone will release a tune for these DCTs...they will shine

I MISS MY HATCH

How many miles on the loaner? Mine has 9k+ miles now and it used to lag on takeoff but now it's really smooth.

Did you reset the mileage indicator on the highway? Cause the high revving of the DCT in auto mode always kills my mileage.

So, are you saying the touring suspension in the loaner is softer than your standard suspension? Or, are you saying that they're both too soft?

I wouldn't go by that one test for mileage. Possible factors that might have caused that much difference:

1. tire pressure
2. headwind
3. drafting
4. air temp
5. gas type
6. driving style
7. mechanical issue?
(probably some others I'm not thinking of)

I have averaged 37mpg over 16000 miles with mostly highway miles with the dct. On straight highway i get ~40.

I wouldn't agree with the suspension being soft having really pushed this car for 16,000 miles. I actually find it quite hard to even get to the breaking point.

I wish I saw these numbers. Even if my tank is 80-90% highway, the best I've gotten out of my DCT SEL was ~34

No the Sedan is softer compared to my hatch...for the average car buyer it might not be too obvious...but for someone that has raced on actual tracks...it is def noticeable, especially when it comes to turn-ins

Also made the trip back to the dealership to pick up my hatch..and again 31-31.5mpg compared to my 34.8-35.00 mpg in my stick....same highway...same day...same conditions

Now I am ruling in that this Sedan could be beat up from all the loaners...
