The Tire Rack recommended size is 195/65/15.

Also, with those tires being smaller diameter then stock size, you're actually close to the ground then before...which may not desirable in heavy snow.

The rims are fine, barring the properly sized tires are on them, 195/65/15's would be fine, but not 195/55/15. If Tire Rack suggests that size they are more of a clueless website than I thought, when your setup is so different than OEM it's not even safe. Your ABS calibration will be messed up, along with the suspension as I've mentioned.

Recycling stuff is never a bad thing, but you just gotta be safe man, especially in the winter.

Not to mention the load index is much lower too. 85 vs. 91.

195/65-15 is a recommended size, that's a bit taller than a 195-55-15. One is 23.5'' tall, the other is 25'' tall.

Between the two, you only lose 3/4'' ground clearance.

One other thing. The OP mentioned paying for the tires 8 years ago.......so are the tires 8 years old?? If yes they should not be used. 6 or 7 years is about the max you want to go with any tire before the rubber compound starts to break down. Those tires might not be safe to use on any car...

^^^ This, I suspect the rubber is hard enough that traction on dry pavement is equivalent to ice. Get them wet or snow an it's gonna be a wild ride!

Take them out and hit the brakes hard a few times to see what you are working with there. You may want to rethink that decision.

Or maybe he meant the wheels were 8 years old bit if the tires are too then yes, they should be thrown away.

If you read what the O.P. wrote its clear that the tires are 8+ years old now since he says they were paid for 8 years, meaning that even if they were brand new off the mold that year they are now over 8 years old, and if they were even a year or two older they could be approaching 10 years old. 4 years longer than the recommended replacement interval for tires due to dry rotting and aging of the rubber.
