Found these two comparisons at Car and Driver. Seems the manual has better performance while the CVT get s better fuel economy which is no surprise. The new generation Impreza is certainly better than the last gen which to me looked like a dated design. To me the last gen hatchback looked like a design from the 1990's. It was just terrible. I don't think the Impreza hatch is as sleek or sporty as the Focus hatch, but it's still a good looking car. I like the new dash design too. Clean and simple.

skepticaleye, that was a great review. We seems to have the same feeling between the Focus and the Impreza.

As for visability, I'm not sure I noticed much of a difference, but I haven't driven the Impreza much. What is hands down better is the blind spot mirrors on the Focus, I miss them now when I drive another car.

As for gas milage the Focus is getting about 34 mpg mixed driving, and the Impreza is around 30. From reading over on NASIOC the mpg is pretty low over all.

On the Impreza have you noticed any oil usage? That is another big concern over on NASOIC. It seems that following the instructed break-in for the engine isn't working well. At just over 3k miles, if the factory fill was 5.3 qts, as stated in the owners manual, we had some oil consumption. So I will be watching that. But its allowable to use a qt ever 1,200 miles, which is crazy if you ask me.

I agree about the blind spot mirrors, Ford does them better than just about anyone else.

No question, the Focus does better on mpg. I spend some time on NASIOC, and 30 mpg combined is pretty common there. A lot of the posters are getting less, and not a bit happy about it, and they are the most active posters as a result. (It's similar on this site.) I'm checking the mpg reported by the car against actual miles and gallons at the pump, and the car seems to be 1.5 to 2 mpg optimistic. That, too, is typical of comments on NASIOC. So I'm getting about 30 mpg combined in the Impreza, like you.

Oil is interesting. In our Focus, it was already amber after about 1,000 miles, and it was down almost a quart. I think Ford sent me off the lot at that level. I started to check it about every 500 miles after that, and the level dropped very slowly. I finally added a quart at about 3,000 miles. It still reads full at 4,500 miles.

In the Impreza, I haven't seen any change in the oil level, and I'm at 4,750 now. And it's very clean, almost clear. Makes it hard to check the oil level, actually.

I would not be happy if I was adding a quart of oil every 1,200 miles.

from what I saw from both cars at about 3k miles was the oil was amber in color, but overall still good. I changed them anyway.

Wife's 2012 Impreza 2.0i Sport Premium 5mt


My 2012 Ti hatch 5mt


The Subie has a much better interior layout, cupholders and cubbys that are useful, the clutch and shifter have a better feel. The Subie's Premium level radio is junk. Ipod control is rudimentary at best. I don't have a smartphone, but I don't think it streams BT anyway. The OE Kicker sub completely overpowers the car. It needs crossover and line level controls. All of these will be addressed when I drop in a double din nav unit. Gas mileage is very good for a Subie. Right now it is getting 28.7 avg over 2700miles.

The Focus is more comfortable to drive. The Ti cloth seats are better suited for longer drives then the cloth seats in the Subie. MFT does a good job, and the steering wheels controls are much more useful then the Subie. Subie is noisier at speed, by a good bit. I'm certain it will be near deafening when driving through snow/slush. Both cars have heated seats, both do well. As for handling, I don't drive either like an asshat, but the Ti Handling Pkg does it's job very well. The Subie drives fine. Focus is getting @32.1 mpg avg over 12K+ miles.

The Subie is perfect for my wife. AWD, enough go to keep up, but no turbo to worry about. Great mileage for AWD, no worries about the gas bill keeping her from doing what she needs. It is almost idiot proof. As soon as I get the audio/nav sorted, I won't have to touch the car except for oil changes and tire rotations.

The Focus is a great little commuter for me. Fun to drive, moddable, enough technology to keep me happy, no DCT to worry about. As long as I don't mess with the suspension too much, it will be a very comfortable sporty driver for years to come.

Ironically even though I have a FF and enjoy it, I would never put it on par with a Subaru or a Honda for the very long term.

Anybody that thinks that a Ford product is comparative in terms of reliability to a Subaru, Honda, or Toyota is not well informed.

All of these cars have their merits of course. People usually purchase a car based on emotion, not what life will be like with the car 5 years from now.

If you trade every 2 or 3 years, then it does not matter what brand you drive. They will all be likely functional until that 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty runs out.

Also something that has come to my attention is the lack of availability of the Subaru that I'd be interested in. I'm specifically looking for either a 2.0i Sport Premium 5MT or a 2.0i Premium with Alloy, All-Weather, and Roof pack. Both are VERY hard to find as the Suby dealer is basically selling them before they even hit the lot.

Immcrea here on FF has found over 6 Focuses in each region that have the exact options I'm looking for, a 201A and Winter, possibly Moonroof. I'm a 2-time Subaru owner and while I'll miss AWD, I'm looking for something "American," fun to drive, and stylish that gets more than the dismal 21mpg combined on premium that my H6 gets!

I had to order both my Focus and my Subie. Neither were available to look at, let alone test drive. Both orders were also f'd up, the Ford by the dealer, the Subie by the manufacturer. Both were worth the extra wait of making the orders right.

This is my 8th Ford(4th new) and 3rd Subie(2nd new). The Subie will be kept until it falls apart, it's tough to say how long I will keep the Focus, as I tend to have automotive ADD. So far, there is nothing wrong with it at 12k miles.

I am looking for an H6 wagon to make my dog transporter and alternate winter vehicle. They tend to have been more expensive to get new, and almost impossible to mod==> they were usually bought by mature drivers and maintained per factory intervals by the dealership or a Subaru specialist.

Where are you from? My H6 has just over 70,000 miles and is exactly like new. First owners were an older couple who took care of their car!
