Battery access

Has anyone noticed that the access to the battery on the '12 is atrocious? I was going to give a coworker a jump tonight after work and I had never really paid attention to the battery access. I couldn't even give him a jump...it looks like the cowl has to be removed to get full access to the battery...can anyone confirm?

You have easy access to two terminals, since the battery ground bracket on the shock tower acts as the chassis ground, otherwise you'd not easily be able to get to the negative battery cable.

^ What he said. It's very easy to access the positive battery connection and the ground on the strut tower for jump-starting. Though it appears difficult, it also is not a big job to replace the battery in this car. The front of the battery box is a "gate" that lifts up and folds down. Then, once the tie-down bracket is removed, the battery just slides right out.

It's a shame that this information is not addressed in the owner's manual.

Yes, it is good info. I take it the positive cable has to be removed first?

I actually only want to check the water levels. My "maintenance free" battery was deader than a doornail this afternoon, completely without warning. The weird thing is it started and drove normally this morning, then 4 hours later, it's dead. 10.45 volts on my meter.

No, you can remove the negative cable from the strut tower before you access the battery, effectively removing the battery/chassis ground connection.

I thougt that on modern cars, due to all the complicated electronics & such, that it was not generally recommened to jump start cars anymore.

I've never heard that. I work for a local PD and we jump cars all the time, even our own when the electronics inside them drain them down. Our 2013 Ford Interceptors have had their batteries die several times and jumping them hasn't done a thing to the endless amount of electronics in them (including aftermarket).
