Did a test today,
first test mic in ceiling foam padding behind it
second test mic hanging by wire
third test mic back in ceiling no foam
Phone Motorola Photon android 2.3.5
Car SE sport no sunroof,no MFT just sync
70 MPH, radio off, windows closed
No difference!, when not talking background is mostly quiet, background noise appears with voice. I have wave files of this test.
Sounds like the mic is being gated, gain down with no voice and gain up with voice ( I'm a broadcast engineer, means I know nothing).
I can post the files.

I have never had anyone say there was noise, and I do a lot of hands free talking.

Posted this a while ago but the tread has gotten larger since then. Sorry if this mod isn't working for some people; It worked for me so I figured I'd take the time to post it.

I think when ford put the mic in the rear view mirror things worked fine. Seems like the noise problems started with the mic in the headliner area

So I discovered that the MFT has a Diagnostics mode and found something interesting within. To access the Diag you hold down the right "Track Fwd" button and the "Eject" at the same time. See below

One of the Diag Menu's had an entry (I think APIM / System Configuration) showed: Second Mic = Not Installed.

Now I was wondering if thats in reference to the higher end Ford vehicles that offer a passenger Mic or is there supposed to be a 2nd mic for a Noise Cancellation functionality.

Curious if everyone else has the same status on the 2nd mic.

How did you figure out this diagnostic mode exsisted? Very interesting find. Good question about the second mic as well.

Anyone know more?

Well I happen to be watching a youtube video of this guy showing his issue with the 0 to 60 after he had his DCT Tranny PCM updated to the latest and come to find out he had a whole bunch of videos on the Focus.. Including one on how to get into that mode. Here's the link

A friend of mine a few weeks back bought the exact same car as mine. A white 2012 Ti Hatchback. I mean our cars are identical. So Ive been telling him to test out his hands free and let me know. Well he calls me today from it and OMG its absolutely perfect. I could not even tell he was on hands free. All this time I thought that all of ours were the same and if someone thought theirs was fine it was just the people on the other end of the call being nice.

I am going to take mine in for the first Oil change soon and definitely going to record a test message so I can play it for them and then tell them that my friend who bought the same car a month ago does not have this issue at all.

He was driving around at 40-45 and it was silent in the background. I called him from mine driving 10-20mph and he said all he could really hear was a TON of wind noise.

SON OF A!.
