I know this sounds odd, and it's just a theory of mine for the time being, but I've found that nearly flooring the car from a dead stop and quickly getting up to speed seems to yield better overall fuel economy. I got the idea watching my girlfriend drive the car and noticed she was getting consistently better mpgs that I was.

I just filled her up with 11.4 gallons, which means there was a gallon in there. The display was reading, DTE 1 mile with what would be a gallon left I guess. Anyways after the fill up:



Engine is young too, 787 miles and getting 35.7 mpg so far, it is still rising everyday.

If you know how to get in to the "TEST" screen on your gauge cluster you can check the fuel flow there.

Yeah, i am a believer in get up to cruise fast and then coast.
I usually run it up in first, second and shift straight to fourth or fifth.

Well so far it's far from scientific, but it sure seems like I'm getting overall better economy by driving this way, probably by about 2 mpg.

I remember years ago reading an article about driving this way and it explained how starting from a stop and getting up to speed quickly (not WOT) was actually better than being overly delicate with the gas pedal. It was so long ago I don't remember the source or the specifics. Anyone else ever hear something like this?

I've heard it as well - there is definitely a break-even point where quickly accelerating and getting into the higher gears sooner pays off.
