Mine has a jerky shift at low speeds and is much like a manual,I rented a six speed Jetta and noticed the same thing with it.

Shutters and lags

2012 SEL Focus P.S. Tranny 302A package.

Like the car overall, some minor dislikes.

The tranny is a "dislike".

My driving:
Morning 65mph to 75mph - Higher speed (more gas applied) the car shifts quick and smooth. Issue - Driving with a heavy foot = crap for MPG. Averaging less than 30 MPG.

Afternoon - Mixed highway speeds with about 10 miles of "stop and go" or rush hour PHX AZ traffic. The trans shutters like hell below 1200 rpm down to the idle of ~ 700 rpm. Shutters like hell with slow ramp of speed from idle ~700 rpm up to the 2nd gear shift.
Issue - Can not excellerate fast due to the cars in front of me. Therefore I have to deal with the shutter. Again, if you can ROMP on the gas you can avoid the shutter (for ramping speed only), but again you kill the MPG.

Slight up hill inclines at lower speeds - Shutters like hell.

Up hill climbs from Phoenix to Flagstaff - Can easily maintain 65 mph to 80 mph with ease (pending traffic), using gears 4/5/6. Kills the MPG. Only average 26 mpg from Flag to Phoenix.

One side note: This car can coast for MILES. The only time I can get over 30 mpg (ave) is when I coast about half the way down the highway mountains from Flagstaff to Phoenix.

Overall, I give this transmission a "NEEDS SOME WORK FORD!".
It annoying as hell in rush hour traffic.
It shifts like butter if you are willing to stomp on the gas and kill your MPG!

If you haven't guessed yet....My 2nd dislike is the MPG sucks for a new 4 banger!

I only have 200 miles on mine, I like the tranny, I did notice the vibration at 1-10 mph brake and acceleration but seems to be getting better

After 500km on mine I am happy. I feel a slight "shudder" at low Roma when I accelerate very gently from a stop but it is very very subtle.
To me the tranny shifts nice and quick and almost always does exactly what I would do in my standard cars. The only time it doesn't is if I change throttle pressure just as it is about to shift and it is probably thinking "shift up or down dummy"!

Sorry ,but I'm far from optimistic after quality control left that car roll out of the assembly line.
I would love an update on this if you still visit... looking at making my dealership's service department look at mine for the same problems. I hit some stop-and-go for the first time this week and the shudder was awful. Posts here had me under the impression that it goes away on its own around 500mi but I hit 900 today and it's just as bad as it was on day 1.

I had an issue after going from neutral to D at a stop light it refused to accelerate and the rpm's refused to go over 3k. I pulled over and shut the car off. Once I restarted the car it acted normally. It felt like the e-brake was on and I physically checked it. I think I did something to upset the car. I used to drive "spirited" in my old automatics and would shift to neutral to cool down the torque converter at red lights. I realize this car does not have a torque converter and does not need the same attention but it was weird that it acted like it was in "limping mode" with no error lights or indications.

If your Focus has a shudder, take it in to the dealer to get adjusted. Mine has never shuddered in the ~4k miles I have driven it. Don't wait for it to go away on it's own.

My Transmission almost screwed me over yesterday when I was getting back home from work. I was waiting for a guy to go past me so that I could speed up onto the I-94 from an entry ramp. I turned around one last time to double-check, after he passed me, if I missed someone coming from behind before I accelerated.

My focus wouldn't accelerate!! It felt like my car was in Neutral. I must've been doing like 20mph when this happened. The car wouldn't go any faster but I could hear the car revving. This totally freaked me out and I had to put it in S and then back in D before the gears would engage and I could drive away.

It was quite scary and the first major problem/issue I had with my transmission.

Wow. I'm glad you didn't pull into another lane with someone coming up from behind you expecting your car to accelerate! That would have been bad. Sounds like a dealership visit is in order.

^^ yeah... I only experienced this once in the 3mo/3500mi I had my car for. I hope it's a one-off thing and if it does happen again, I'll drop it at the dealership. It's highly unlikely that I'll be able to make the car recreate, in front of a service rep, what happened the other day.
