I completely agree with you. I'm sure there is a break-even point where accelerating faster will get you to your highest gear faster - but flooring it is not the way to achieve that. I feel that anything over 2.5-3k rpm acceleration will probably lead to a loss in fuel mileage. I try to keep it around there when I have the opportunity, but 9 times out of 10 there are 12 cars behind me riding my ass - so I go faster for them.

I wonder about Shell gasoline and it's Nitrogen bla bla.

My second and third tank full was Kroger Gas. I got 29.5 and then 32 mpg.

Fourth tank I put Shell gas in and I'll be lucky to get 28mpg. Used half tank and only gone 145 miles.
Same commute/route, same temps over 100. City driving.

I experienced the same phenom on a trip to Florida in my Civic last spring.
Kroger gas 41mpg. Shell gas 34mpg driving same speed (73 on cruise), road, and temp conditions.
Houston to Florida, and back is all I10. Flat, and boring.

I think I'll stick with Kroger.

I've noticed some differences myself. I've been testing the 87 vs 93 octane debate this past few few weeks and I noticed something weird.

My first 1-2 tanks were 87 octane and averaged somewhere near 33 mpg. Given that those were my first 1000 miles, I can't take those into account with the whole break-in period effecting it. My next couple tanks of 93 octane from Woodman's averaged nearly 41 mpg COMBINED. My current tank is 93 from BP and I'm having the darnedest time keeping it above 37 mpg...

Normal driving makes it extremely difficult to figure out which octanes & brands lend better results because there are so many darned variable including traffic, grade of roads, luck of stop lights, wind etc. So, unless you are driving on a test track, it's tough to know what effect the fuel is having. It's one of many reasons I wish the Focus had a MPG reading that showed current MPG. This would allow us to observe the current MPG over a repeated streak of road. My '97 Chrysler mini-van allowed displayed both average and current MPG so I don't know why they could not have included that.

Double the MPG and better everything else is definitely a worthwhile tradeoff..

I just found the one thing I'm jealous of PowerShift owners for... 6th gear rpms. The speed limit on most of the autobahn is roughly 81mph, my 5-speed is at approximately 3500rpm... based on the final drive and 6th gear ratios the PowerShift would only be reving approximately 3000 rpm.

Oddly enough, at a more sedate 55mph, both transmissions would be turning approximately 2000rpm... It's only at the higher speeds that the PowerShift shows an advantage.

My old Saab 9-3, however, only turned about 1800rpm in 5th at 55mph... and had a (theoretical) top speed of almost 200mph... so you can guess how well it did cruising at a mere 100mph (excellent).

Was that the 1.9 150 engine? Had the same engine in my astra Sri if it is. BUT I had mine re-mapped a de-limited. 207bhp 390ft/lb torque and 162mph and very very quick...

My Saab had the 2.0t, 175hp/195lb-ft version... sadly the US never got the diesel option.
