hit 41 mpg last weekend from Sunnyvale to Daly City (all freeway). Once we hit the city and I kicked in "s" mode, it dropped to 38

Achieved 45.4mpg on a recent 50 mile trip. I drive a manual and coast a lot. I also do a lot of fast highway driving and have been happily averaging 34mpg when doing 70-80mph.

At this point, I have just under 1500 miles on the car, 2012 SE 5 Door Hatch. On my current tank I am getting 29.7 mpg, over all though is 27.6. I mostly use the car for commuting, I take the highway in the morning and 2ndary roads on the way home, just to mix it up. I drive about 75 mph on the highway, and between 35-50 on 2ndary roads.

1100 miles on 5sp SE hatch. I am averaging 35.1 mpg of mostly highway driving with ac on most all the time. Looking fw to getting better with onset of winter and not having to use the ac.

The average reading on the car is a bit different from my calculation...

Last time, the car said 31Mpg after a complete tank, but I calculate 33,6Mpg according to odometer and gallon I put in the tank...

Method is always the same, fill when I see the gas light, fill until it is full, stop at the first click. I take the millage done since the last fill and divide it by the amount of gallon I put in the Tank.

The last method I use is more accurate.

2000miles and Mpg still getting better.

Last fill I have tried grade 91 fuel... Will see the mpg after a tank. Already noted more power at stop and go! A lot more Aggressive acceleration, have to be more gentle with the gas pedal with grade 91. Wonder what grade 94 will do :). Next time!

On the topic of MPGs: I dislike that while braking for a stop sign or stoplight that the car downshifts through all of the gears. I think it might also be worse for gas mileage.

As opposed to forcing the engine to 2300 rpm as it downshifts, I just shift it into neutral and coast like it's a manual car (which seems to roll without losing nearly as much speed). This makes sense considering it essentially IS a manual car. This way the engine idles at like 700 rpm while I coast. Then I shift it back into drive when I'm ready to roll. For the record, I haven't had any trouble shifting it into drive while moving either.

Does anyone else do this?

hmm. no. can't say that i do.

if you suddenly need power (swerving out of the way of something) you're not going to have it. in a stick you wouldn't either, but you also would be more instinctive in putting it back in gear.

the only downside i can see to what you're doing is the computer might get confused, or learn that behavior and should anyone else drive the car it might get confused.

one would think ford (and other manufacturers) had taken this into account when designing the system. i'd just drive it as i would any automatic.
