Dome light vs Map light

I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two. I understand the map light is for when "looking at a map" and blah blah. The question is: Does one go on when the car is unlocked from the outside, and does a different one go on when I push the button in the car? So is it the map light that goes on when I push the button, and the dome light that goes on when I unlock the car from the outside?
Reason being why I ask is because I'm toying around with the idea of having the dome light be one color and the map light be another color.

Map lights (2) flank the Dome light (1) . In my '06 that is. Make sure you get the right Map Lights, cuz I accidentally got wedges when I tried changing em out.

I only see the map lights. I don't see any light in between and when I unlock or push the light button, it's the same light that comes on. Thanks for the information though.

I really don't think our Mk2 has a dome light. Just maps up front by the sunroof controls.

The sedan may be different then the coupe, but I can't say for sure.
