Trans is acting up

I drive a ’10 SES automatic, and lately it has been doing this thing where I will be driving around 50 – 60 mph with the overdrive on (light is off) and my car feels like it disengages gear then reengage 4-5 times really quick, but the revs stay within 500 rpm’s. I checked the trans fluid it is clean and in between min. and max. I checked the oil, good, air filter clean, and all around still pretty sturdy everywhere else. Does anybody know what this could be? It has 35,600 miles.

Hard to say but it may be right at the point where it thinks it needs to change down due to load and revs.... Does it do this with cruise control on?

My mountaineer does the same thing. It has the 5r55 trans from france and its considered a learning trans and I guess is trying to predict what im fringe to do. Its always locking and unlocking the torque converter and changing down. A heavy boot corrects this..

You really can't have too much trans fluid. There is an over flow to prevent well...over fill. The trans sits in the oil like a bath. It cools, cleans, and lubricates. The more the better....

Take it to the dealer for warranty work. You have just under 36k.

Well I'm at the dealer now, to get a squeak looked at and brakes, I asked them to look at the trans lets see what happens.

The 5R55 is probably one of the worst transmissions Ford has stuck in a rear wheel drive application. Horrible reputation. Hunting for overdrive and unlocking the torque converter are different than slipping. I'd check to make sure it is, in fact, changing gears and not slipping.

It is possible to overfill an auto transmission. The results are pretty substantial ... at best , you're going to "boil" out and "foam" the fluid. What could happen, and what would be very likely, is you blow out the seals in the transmission.

TPS could be going bad and telling the transmission that your foot is coming off of the pedal
