The K&N Air Filter...

the drop in unit. i know i probably could have searched (did and found nothing helpful) and found my answer but oh well. got some questions on it. thinking about buying one locally. not in an attempt to gain whatever decimals worth of HP i can get from it but just in an attempt to hopefully get a bit better gas mileage. so im wondering if anyone here has the drop in filter, how much of an improvement are you getting with it?

I have a drop in K&N on my Svt and haven't noticed any major gain in anything. There was a noticeable difference for the better between 2000-2500 rpm but nothing major in the power and fuel economy. I should say that the filter I replaced wasn't all that dirty so I didn't have as much change as compared to a dirty filter.

In theory it shouldn't improve your mpg. On a carburated engine, I think it made a difference, but fuel injected engines can better adjust to changes in atmospheric pressure and therefore intake restrictions. Assuming you are trying to go say 55 mph, and your filter has less restriction, you have to close the throttle a little to stay at 55 mph. At WOT, the lower restriction should be good for a little more airflow and therefore power. That being said, I run K&N drop ins in all my vehicles just in case I'm wrong. I also keep them long enough to make bank on the reusable aspect.

I got a cold air intake system from K&N... direct link
http://www.jegs.com/i/K%26amp%3BN/59...16TTK/10002/-1

I bought it on a 50% off sale when it was like $135 bucks or something... anyways it's amazing its almost 6+ hp and I saw like 3-4 gain on MPG

As far as sound goes it sounds strong and deep noise when your rpm over 2500 and once you start to reach 6000 you can hear it sucking air so hard it sounds like turbo... great system and I would definitely recommend it.

My K&N filter for the 2012 seemed to help with a little power off the line at normal takeoff (manual tranny)
Also a bit better MPG.

It's a good, low cost mod to invest in your car. you can buy them all day long at auto zone for $40. Plus the filters are reusable,so you dont always have to buy replacement filters after so many miles. It depends on the car as to how much your mpg's improve. I would recomend it for your everyday driver.

None of my Autozones carry our style K&N filters or intakes. They don't even carry OEM or even Fram. I have to order them and wait a few days. For that I may as well just buy it online and get the whole intake.
