Airbag and interior questions

I want to make a nice leather cover for my dash and was wondering where the passenger side airbag deploys from. Is it from where the FOCUS lettering is at? Or is it somewhere else.

On that note, where else in the interior can I not cover with leather (or other material) due to airbags? I want to cover as much plastic and fabric as possible.

Where can I find a how-to on removing the seat fabric. I know it'll be a PITA, but I want to make custom leather seats over the factory padding (maybe even add a little extra).

I'm going for a classy BMW-esque look, which I think will set it apart. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
PowerFocer

On the top of the dash above the molding that says Focus on it is where the passenger side airbag deploys. There is airbags in the "A" pillars on both sides and those stretch all the way to the "C" pillar, these are the side curtain air bags. There are two each in the captain chairs in the front seat as well as the one in the horn.

I think that's all of them, also I am not sure how far down the side curtain bags brake through when they deploy. If you get level with the dash though you can see the outline of the passenger side airbag on the top of the dash.

i know a few years back the italians were scoring the backside of the leather dash so the airbag could break through. but you could clearly see where they had done so....

the a pillars are held in by two clips and when the air bag deploys it pushes the trim away but the trim does not fly off the tabs keep it in place

i cant feel any scoring on the seat so im not sure if the seems give way or if it is a special type of leatherette.. my idea was to get leather to match and just have the seating surface customized and not have to deal with the sides and back

to remove the seat covers is not at all too hard. start at the bottom and work your way up. on the fron edge of the bottom cusion there is a black plastic retaining clip. it rotates off. there should be one for each side of the seat. then simply roll the cover off. you will find that onthe top of the cusion the fabric is held in by velcro and a metal rod that is anchored to the foam. you can cut the wires that hold it or save them for reinstall.- i used zip ties for the reinstall.

the seat back is the same. where the back and front join at the base they are secured to gether by a black plastic clip. pry them apart and start to roll the fabric up stopping to undow any fasteners and velcro.

now to remove the plastic headrestadjusters is the tricky part. you have to do it from inside the seat. they are barbed so you need to collapse the barbs then pull those through. finsished. just remember not to touch any yellow/orange wires as they control the bags. best yo9u undo the battery and wait 10-15 to be onthe safe side if you are going to play with those. if you do unhook them whenyou go to plug them back in do so with the key off and the battery out. then turn the key to run and go plug the battery in. this is so if they were to detonate you obe well clear of it.

to reinstall the fabric onthe chairs reverse the order

Thanks for the great info! Its kind of hard to picture exactly what both of you are talking about though. What do you mean there are airbags "in" the front seats? Are they in the back of the seat for the rear seat passengers?

And where do the curtain airbags deploy from; the A pillars? Or do they come from the roof?

Also, do the airbags split the material like it does in some vehicle or does it justcome out from a seam? In which case as long as I leave the seams untouched it should be fine.

yes there are airbags in the front seats, on the side next to the door. They are there to protect you from side impacts (side impact airbags). The seam of the seat will split apart upon deployment.
The Curtin airbag deploys from the roofline from the A piller to the C piller.

So how do you think I should go about this? If I sew leather seats I don't want to make the seam too strong and have it like destroy something if it goes off. And does the curtain airbag come down from between the roof and the headliner?

the line the oem use is pretty strong stuff. i would say it tears through the leather. i havnt seem an airbag be stopped by anything, it will find a way...

yes it pushes past the rubber seal that overlaps the headliner and pushes the plastic trim pieces out of the way. it is quite destructive and nothing it touches can be reused.

i know i looked into seat covers and katzkin claims that theres are all compatable. they cost around 650 for all the seats and they can customize ever aspect of the seat. you do not need to use the focus' pattern. there website used to let you create the pattern online so you could see the final product rendered but i dont see where to do that now...

heres some more vids of seat deployment
