Parts problem hurts Ford Focus sales

The people, who didn't want to be identified because they're not authorized to speak about the matter, said Ford is working to fix the equipment problem at the parts plant in Saline, Mich., but so far the company hasn't found a solutionhttp://finance.yahoo.com/news/AP-Sou...41017.html?x=0 many dealers across the country, said all the Focuses he has are spoken for, and it takes about 60 days to get one for a customer who's on the waiting list.

"We are virtually out of inventory," he said.

I wonder how this parts problem combined with the demand and back orders could affect the quality?

I actually got two separate emails from a Toyota and a Hyundai dealership saying that they are in a similar supply rut. People have to wait weeks or even months to get the car they want, simply because everything is on back order, or in this case, one or two items are.

Since the US economy isn't exactly stellar right now, they're making the fiscally responsible decision to monitor part inventories and only hold exactly what you need on hand. Inventories cost money, after all. So if there's a slow-down at a single part factory and you have little or no inventory, this happens.

So in a sense it's a good thing because it means more people are buying cars than originally expected (which hopefully means more people can AFFORD cars), but in another sense it's a bad thing because they're making customers wait.

And in my opinion, I HIGHLY doubt car makers would allow quality to dip. There have been too many instances in the recent past where a single flaw (or an accusation of a flaw) can seriously scar a manufacturer's reputation. No one can afford any screw ups right now, and I think all car manufacturers are trying as hard as they can to look long term and not for a quick dollar now.

But on the other hand, the news story states that even though the machine that makes the needed part is broken they still are using it sporadically to make the part in question!. This indicates to me they are willing to take chances in order to keep up quotas!. This kind of activity makes one worry about quality. "Ford spokesman Todd Nissen said company policy is not to comment on internal workings at its plants. But he said the Saline factory continues to make dashboards for the Focus.

Despite the problem"

Well the article says the machine works intermittently, and the part in question is the skin on the dashboard, not anything to do with performance or safety. Is it possible that quality will decrease? Of course. It would be blind to say otherwise. But is it also possible that there will be no effect other than people talking about it on message boards like us right now?

I'd wager that's a fair gamble.

That's not the point! If this is going on at the plant who is to say they are not having other problems at the plant that haven't came into public view?. They are takeing risks to keep sales and profit!

I understand, but I think that's the case with anything that's manufactured anywhere. But it's like everything - the first generation of something new will always have problems.

And if there are problems, they will be exposed in time. It's always been the case. If they skimp, we will all know about it within a month or two, since thousands of these cars are being sold each month.

I just don't think it's worth losing any sleep over. But maybe that's just my outlook on life. Always prepare for the worst and expect the best.

In the end I just don't think this should affect someone's decision to buy. Because if there's a flaw, then it will be covered under a recall. But again, maybe that's just me. I have too many other things to care about in my life.

Anyways, thanks for sharing! Never hurts to have information.
