Installing lights / painting grille

So I'm about to start my conversion with my 2008 focus. Just got my halo headlights in...

Going to have them installed tomorrow and getting the front grille painted gunmetal. Actually can't decide on black or gun. Here is my car now, it's all black with 20% tint all around

Would you do gunmetal or black? End result I want my car to look like this

It would cost you about $12 if you just bought the paint and clear coat yourself. $6 if you wanted flat black.

Is that grill metal or shiny plastic? Either way, I agree with 2011 SE on doing it yourself, it would not be difficult to get a good result with some elbow grease and spray paint. Plus you could try different colors and see what you like best, a piece like that would be quick to prep and paint multiple times. Kind of fun too.

The grill is shiny plastic. Prep work is ridiculously simple and fast. The part that took the longest for me was taping off the plastic around it, but that's because I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

Personally if you're going to paint it, I would recommend the following (this is what I did):

1) Paint it gunmetal/shadow chrome FIRST, since you already have the chrome base.
2) If you don't like how it looks, paint it black.

I used this stuff for shadow chrome - it's available at every Autozone that I've checked out: http://www.amazon.com/Dupli-Color-SH...6444203&sr=8-1

I JUST painted my grill with that stuff a few days ago. I put on about 3 coats (last one was too heavy, imo), and this is how it came out:

So in shadow it looks black, but in sunlight you can see the dark shine. I still might paint it black, though, since I want my whole front end to match. The color of the shadow chrome isn't black...it's sort of a really deep blue/purple.

Either way I thought I'd throw this out there for you to consider!

2011 SE, that came out pretty good, that's an interesting shade for sure. Kind of wish I had seen that before I just refinished my cheapo shift knob. Is there no easy way to remove that grill piece? Seems like that would be the ideal way to do it.

I just painted all my grills with some Krylon stuff that is specifically for plastic, it's called Fusion or something. Seems to have bonded really well, it's a slightly satiny black but with some clear on it I think it would pop some. I like that it's specifically for plastic, makes me think it might have a more lasting finish.

Actually with some clear on it I think it would come out damn close to what OP djdavid wants, so maybe look into that man.

The grill comes out pretty easily once you know how to do it. All you have to do is remove the four plastic push pins on the top, then pop the catches on the bottom that hold the grill to the bumper cover (and prevent it from falling off the front of the car?). It took me a while to figure it out, but now I just use a long flat head screwdriver to pry underneath each side until the grill pops out.

There's a how-to somewhere on the forums for removing the headlights that goes through grill removal.

Edit: Here's a picture of where the push pins and catches are located.

Hey 2011 SE, I used the product you used and did not get good results. From the pictures you posted, your grill looks like the paint is all one solid color, not on mine, I have all of these dark spots and I am not happy with how it came out. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Glad you posted that, I was seriously considering doing this to my '08. I'd like to see what yours came out looking like first though.

And as a backup plan, anyone who has one of the newer Foci with the OEM black grille, is it more matte or gloss finished?
