Speedo bulbs blown, possible speedo mod opportunity.

Just started up my car up randomly one night to make a quick run to the store and I'm greeted with this.

Speedo bulbs blown, possible speedo mod opportunity.-imag0467.jpg

Since this happened, I figure I'll go ahead and replace them all. I've been searching around and found out that I don't have to replace warning lights because they are built in LED's.

My question is, to anyone who has replaced these bulbs before, how many are there that needs replacing? And I also wonder if there are LED replacements for these 2721 bulbs? I don't ever use the dimmer because I like my guages to be as bright as possible and I know that LED's don't really respond to dimmers. I also plan on scraping off the green under-layer so it'll shine white.

White gauges at the brightest setting might hurt your night vision. Red interferes with night vision the least.

Yeah, true. I didn't think that through, that's what happens when I get an idea and wanting to try something different.

I do think red would look nice though. If I do that though, would the odometer change color too? Or is the green color part of the screen?

Gotta check the cluster to see how many are bulbs vs. LED's, more LED's in later year models.

Yeah, I'll be ripping mine out this weekend. I wanted to know before hand so I can fix it. I'm probably going to go to the junk yard too and grab one so I have something I play around with.

2005 - 2007 clusters use LED's for all lights except the backlight. For the backlight bulbs themselves they are 2721 (or 2724 if you want slightly brighter but with shorter bulb life) type bulbs, which should be available at your local auto parts store. I believe 3 bulbs in the non-tach clusters and 5 in the tach clusters for the back lighting. Also the automatic shifter light and HVAC control lights use the same bulbs.

Note: While other sizes of bulbs like 193 may sort of fit into the bulb socket, they are slightly larger which will cause the socket to stretch and make it hard to reinsert the bulb+socket into the cluster.

The light over my fuel guage was out for a while. I decided to change them all to LED. Like mentioned i think there was 5 or 6 for the backlight.

Only issue is you will get 2 spots that are a little brighter. At the top of the tach, and speedo. Happen to have this pic of at least the #5 on the tach you can see its slightly brighter. No bid deal. Same thing with my climate control lights.

LED's were from Amazon Jtech 10 x T5, 5050 SMD LED White Car Lights Bulb

Also video on how to get to them as well on the tube

Hot spots aside, are the LEDs noticeably brighter than stock?

Thinking about ditching the stock el-glow panel in the SVT, it's getting old and dim.
