Armrest won't stay closed

My 2001 SE's center armrest "latch" was broken so I ordered another one. Now, the spring-loaded "latch" won't go in far enough to "catch" the hole and stay closed. I was thinking of helping it a little by gluing a little plastic above the hole. what do you think?

My 06 did that as well, ended up buying a new armrest cover, with the latch, for $10 on ebay, fixed it, now i know to be more careful with it, the dealer wanted $165 for the whole armrest, as they said you can only buy the whole thing, not just the tope peice.

If it still annoys you, I'd say just take the whole damn thing off. An arm rest delete doesn't look half bad, and it makes access to the parking brake MUCH easier. It also makes the interior feel a little more roomier.

The top latch area isn't the only thing that's fragile. The internal parts where it pivots is also constructed pretty cheaply. They use really cheap plastic caps to hold the central metal rod in place, and leaning too much into the arm rest will cause one of those caps to snap right off.

It's a shame Ford didn't bring over the European style arm rests—I think they're lower into the console and much sturdier. We got screwed with the tall, clumsy and cheap ones. Removing my arm rest has so far been the best interior mod to date, and I'd highly recommend trying it out for a while to see if you might like it too. All it takes is one screwdriver and a few seconds.

Maybe I wasn't clear. Mine's not broken. It just won't stay closed. I was thinking of gluing a little piece of plastic to keep it closed.
