Reverse leaver on 5 speed?

ok so im looking at getting a new shift knob for my focus but it has the leaver that you pull up on to go into reverse. how do i get rid of it(if you can)? or can you put on a new knob with that on?

Yes, you can remove it. Personally, I like mine, just for a little extra safety, but some claim its not really needed. (I don't know, since its been a long time since I've had a MTX apart)

you unscrew your shiftknob, and the black collar slides right off. install new shiftknob.

Since our transmissions have synchros, it'll take some serious effort (and thus a SERIOUS brain fart) to lever your car into reverse while at speed.

IMO, reverse lockout is overrated.

I have noticed that even with the collar pulled up, pulling the transmission out of fifth, and continuing to pull back, will result in the shifter going back to fourth, "sliding" by reverse. An internal lockout requires moving the shifter over to first/second position before it will allow reverse to be engaged. My Jeep Wrangler (NV3550 transmission) (and a 1990 Festiva (5-spd) that I once owned) has a similar lockout to prevent fifth-to-reverse shifts at ill-advised times.
