Radio reception suddenly died?

I have a stock head unit and antenna, my radio recption has fine one day and the next all radio reception is barely audible. I just get static and very weak sound from any station. I pulled the radio and check the connections, all ok. I then unscrewed the antenna from the roof and the radio went to all static. FM and AM are bothe effectied. My question is: does the Focus have an antenna booster that could have failed? If not I am assuming the HU has failed as I find it hard to believe that the antenna has failed. Any suggestions? and is there a way to test the antenna short of trying anther head unit?
