Believe it or not.. I bought a shift knob that I like.. and I just saw the stock shifter short (to my prefered height).. and put the knob in..
It was a perfect job.. don't even need to worry anything about the shifting cable and stuff.. hehehehe
Yeah that's probanly the best short shifter because its the cheapest way...however, its not a short throw shifter. I know the steeda and frpp are the same because my frpp sts was shipped directly from the steeda warehouse with steeda packaing.
Yeah.. I did that because I read on some forum that there are some fake aftermarket short shifter.. also some aftermarket short shifter gives a lot of problem after awhile.. so I decided the best short shifter is the one that comes with the car.. heehehe
but its only a shorter handle...not a true short THROW shifter. The frpp/steeda changes the pivot point so that the actual shifter movement is shorter without reducing handle length much
I agree with you! But, Black, he means chopping the stock shifter is not superior to the FRPP. Not only because of the design put into the pivot points and what not, the material used is also very important. Looking at the Ford Racing Short Throw Shifter, the metal ball at the base is made of... well... metal. The stock shifter has a plastic ball. Plastic is much more maliable and the throws do not feel as notchy or tight. You could best describe it as, "Loosey goosey, baby... loosey goosey." (ref. Jack Black; "School of Rock") Huge performance difference made by difference in material and design.
Thanks for all the responses so far...now if the FRPP/Steeda shifter is the same thing, howcome on www.c-f-m.com , one is $30 more than the other? Is it because, like somebody said earlier, one comes with parts and the other doesn't?
I've seen both a steeda and frpp. They came in the same packaging and with all the same parts. so i believe they're exactly the same. That's the first time i've heard they came with different parts. however, I have the frpp installed in my car and the shift assist plate snapped(maybe due to cold?). Its rare but happened. Anyway, CFM told me to contact steeda for a replacement. Steeda sent a replacement right away even though I told them it was frpp. I have read somewhere that someone got a steeda one that was preassembled. not sure though. Basically there is an included pin that needs to be installed to fit the reverse lockout
The pivot for the short throw is where all the shorter throw work actually comess into play. Is it not? If thats true then does the length of the shifter in essence even matter?
I've always been under the impression that Steedas came assembled, which cost a little bit more, while FRPPs came as just the shifter, that you would have to slide it in what you already have.
i guess that's why i heard the steedas were pre assembled...still not worth the extra money. The only assembly is installing the reverse lockout with a pin which is a no-brainer.
I'm in Bethpage and yes I know about the meet near the source mall...just never have time to get there. I work in the city and usually hang out late into the night. saturday i'm usually running errands. Hopefully i'll be able to pop in eventually on a saturday afternoon.
That image is awesome, haha, I love the hypothetical disclaimer.
And speaking of breaking shifing components, I broke the black plastic that keeps the whole assebly in place. The one that blots dirrectly to the car. Know what I'm talking about?
This was regualr shifting with the regular shifter. (Ok, ok, hard shifting). Cost like $160 for Ford to put in a new one ($35 part). I need to stop going to the Dealer for service.
SVT's only, but to help explain the workings of a short shifter.
Here is a shot of the Race shifter, Steeda STS and the factory stocker. Looking at the lower linkage point you can see that the Steeda(FRPP) is longer which gives more travel below the pivot point. So it takes less movement to switch grears.
The race shifter is shorter above but requires more presssure to shift as there is less leverage. I also notice that it is less tappered on the botton of the ball which is why it was harder to get into Reverse due to the lockout. I got rid of the race shifter and went back to the steeda.
before i post my own thread i am looking for a short throw shifter for my zx3 that doesnt lose much height and is very crisp to shift and short in the throw. Is the steeda the way to go? i dont like small shifters?
since u have a pre april 02 focus the ford racing sts is the way to go. the lower pivot point is changed so the throw is shorter but the height isn't much different.
PARKINGLOT, yes you can use the stock knob with the steeda/frpp unit
