ok so i posted a recent thread about how to improve the resale value of my car, and i've now run into a bigger problem...rust i noticed that there is a few rust spots under my car, and behind my side skirts, and was wondering if there is a way that i could remove or at least prevent the rust from spreading even further. i know quite a decent amount about detailing and simple paint repairs so i would think i'd have to scrape off the surface rust and sand down to the bare metal, follow up with a layer of primer and then a few coats of paint.. the way i see things, if i don't end up selling, i might as well make the car last as long as possible by fixing everything.

i don't know what it'll do to the paint but ever think about WD-40? that can help remove the rust.

yeah i don't know about wd40 but i know there are some rust removers out there. i just want my car to be able to last as long as possible. i'd like to sell it to buy another newer and better car but being in college i can't depend on becoming a professional lifeguard to pay for a new car. both my parents have driven their cars into the ground and had the bottoms rust out before any major mechanical failures took place, and i'm not going to let that happen to my car.

NAPA sell this rust eliminator stuff... go buy a bottle of it (about $9, but it works great). sand the area down as smooth as you can get it (if its a hidden area, dont worry about how smooth it is), just get the paint and as much rust off as you can.

after that, shake the bottle up, pour some in a cup, and paint it on with a brush. let it dry, then give it another coat for uniformity. the rusted areas will turn black, anything that isnt rusted will be clear. after the 2nd coat is dry, prime it, seal it and paint it. dont, for the love of god, sand the rust eliminator. you can spray a couple coats of primer and sand that, but leave the eliminator as is.

ive used this stuff all over on my supra, and ill tell you, after a couple other [:)][:)][:)][:)] ups, and having to sand it back down, and seeing no rust, ill live by this stuff.

do you have an undercoating on your car? if not, id recommend it. itll stop any more rust, and it protects your floorboards and stuff from rocks and other things. you can buy 3m rubberised undercoating for not too much, just wrap everything you dont want sprayed and go to town.

speaking of focuses and rust, does anyone else have rust around their gas filler cap?

and dont use wd-40... use something thats made for rust treatment. if youre going to try and paint over the area, wd40 will [:)][:)][:)][:)] up the new paint (just the chemicals sticking to the metal, no matter how much you clean it).

if you have a friend with a wheel grinder, use the brush wheel, takes rust off in seconds. Brings it to the bare metal. Primer it and your choice of either paint or an immitation rhino lining. I think the guy before me was getting at that sort of thing where you have to mask off the areas you dont want covered becuase it will be there for a very long time (to help keep rust out)

for extensive rust that has penetrated thru the metal, the affected area must be cut out, and the surrounding area needs to be sandblasted.. a little bit of rust left on bare metal after repainting will later spread.

this was the advice given to me by a paint guru regarding a 35 year old car. Remove the rust before it's too late...
