What kind of genius engineered the hatch on these cars?

What the heck Ford? Didn't let the engineers get enough sleep one night?

Why is it the only way to open the hatch is with the key fob or hatch button on the dash? All electronic...

I could hide someone in the trunk with some cinderblocks on top of the hatch cover and they couldn't escape.

Why is there no manual option for getting it open when the doors are unlocked if say the wiring gets crimped in half like it is known to do or the battery is dead?

Dont say just reach in through the back seat either.

Thoughts?

are you talking about getting it open from the inside (if you were stuffed in the back)

or open from the outside if the battery was dead.

If the battery is dead, open the door manually, pop the hood, charge or replace the battery, and then pop the trunk.

If the wire is crimped, crawl in the back and fix it. ;)

I don't care if that's not what you wanted to hear. ;)

You could hide someone in ANY trunk and put cinder blocks on top to prevent them from escaping.

Last I checked there was a spot for a key on the outside of the trunk/hatch. Although the cylinder is frozen from lack of use on my hatch.

My '02 sedan has both external trunk lid manual old school key unlock along with a child-in-trunk unlock cable inside trunk.

I'm fairly certain i still have used my key to open the hatch from the outside when the battery was disconnected...

yeah sedans will have the glow in the dark pull handle on the inside as there is no easy way into the cabin from the trunk... where as the hatch backs you can just climb into the cabin without much fuss unless you really struggle with the hatch lid.

Oh my....I have the biggest duh moment for the month on the forum....probably could just delete this threat haha.

Forgot about the key because when i was at the pick yard they don't keep the keys with the car so i had no way of opening the hatch because the battery was out.

Super Blonde moment...

So if the hatch was shaved how would you open it from the inside?

I don't think you can get to the wiring with the hatch closed can you? This would be good information to know.

Yeah my sedan does too, why doesn't the hatch have this in it? Just because there is no where to put it?

Thats why they are labeled as 3dr and 5dr, to avoid the legal escape handle. And yes SPI the key is key to the moral of your story.
