Getting booted from the Air Force

As some of you in the AF may know, we had another RIF (Reduction In Force) board. they announced earlier this year that manning would be cut because retention has been too high. Voluntary separation was offered in the summer, but I chose to roll the dice, because I wanted to be a career guy and thought my record was good enough to not get cut. Apparently that didn't quite work out. In my AFSC, 13S (space and missiles), for the 2004 commissioning year group, 19 out of 120 Officers were cut, including myself and two of my co-workers. Between the voluntary separation, and the final board selections, 1,373 enlisted and 4,373 officers, are now out of a job. Please keep those airmen in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this tough time, and try to figure out what the heck to do next.

-Capt (or should I say Civ(Sel)) Zenkert

Yes it's an honorable discharge. I thought about blue to green. There's a guy who got cut in the last RIF in 05 (oddly enough in my exact position), and he has a pretty kickass space job in colorado, in the army, but working with air force guys he used to work with up here. I'll probably look into the reserves or guard. My main goal right now is to move back east and live with my wife. She's been in school for the past 3 years for her PsyD and has another 2 years left. I think this is just Gods way of saying we should be living together. We'll see what happens.

That's a positive way to look at things.
Man, I could never be away from my wife for that long.
How often were you able to get back and see her?

I also see Malmstrom is losing all it's F-15s now.

Sorry about the job loss. But, I see any cut in military as a very positive thing. There are way better uses for my money.

This is such a BS Women and Men who are defending this country are getting kicked out, but it is okay to support millions of lazy D-bags that live form the "disability" or "unemployment"

Disability and unemployment are not a good way to spend my money either. But, you must agree that the DOD's budget is gross. Why does it cost 1 trillion dollars to "Defend" this nation? When was the last time another country attacked the USA? Yes, big stick works, but, do you need the whole damn tree? If the military reduced to half budget just imagine the things this country could do with the money. The Infrastructure (roads, bridges, sewers) needs major repair. I respect you military people for your service, although i do not believe you are truly serving the country. You are serving the government and their agenda, not the people. The individual people make up the country here in the USA. the government seems to forget this. The undersizing of the military also would not have to mean less jobs. We could simply create a government agency thats.... helpful. I know strange idea. Maybe a national D.P.W. to repair the failing roads with out using contractors. I could continue but whats the point?

I don't know what the real world answer is but, at least I am thinking, and I am at work pretty bored, typing this entertained me.

Thank you for your efforts.

^wow thanks. I'm glad that the sacrifice that military members and their families give this country entertains you. It's thinking like yours that explains why the military is so under staffed and under funded. That's right I said UNDER funded. We can barely keep our equipment working because nobody wants to develop a new system for nukes. I won't even get into what our troops overseas need to survive the mess they're in. I did serve my country, and I did it proudly. thank you very much, and have a nice day. Oh and sleep well tonight knowing that there are thousands of people that are keeping you safe from other countries invading this great nation.

ZenRanger, it's terrible that you got cut, especially since you were on a career track, but Alex raises valid points and I applaud him for bring them up. To say that the military as a whole is "under staffed and under funded" is demonstrably wrong, and being an officer one might expect you to know this. To imply that the DoD is hurting for money because they are thinning the ranks is vastly overly simplifying it. Again, I'm sorry that you lost your job, but welcome to the uncertainty of civilian life, America is in rough shape if you're not in uniform.

The American military is the most expensive organization in world history, and by a few orders of magnitude. Here's a pie chart showing American military spending as compared to the rest of the world. We wouldn't spend nearly as much if there were any kind of oversight about how much the DoD pays for it's equipment, the contracts are outrageously lucrative for private businesses, that's where the real money goes.

Here's another pie chart showing military spending in relation to other tax funded budgets.

Again, it's ridiculously disproportionate.

So, it sucks that you lost your job, but this is America now, largely thanks to this disproportionate military spending and the questionable decade long war on terror. I also served 6 years, so spare me the patriotic rhetoric. I agree that forces are generally spread thin, but this is due to the wars and allocation of budget, not a general lack of funding.

I don't mean to be so harsh about it, but millions of people in America have recently lost their livelihoods for less explicable reasons.
