Seems like just having a weight variable would be easiest.

250lb driver 150lb car at 10 hp = .025 hp per lb.

400lbs = 10hp

150lb racer would have a 7.5hp car.

200lb racer would have an 8.75hp car.

Its definitely possible. You'd be amazed what you can do with this stuff. I once wrote a variable frequency drive for an ac motor completely in software... 1000hz control. And we could do it much faster with a modern micro.

Sent from my DROID2 using FF Mobile
plus karts would still seem faster to the light guys anyways because insta torques!

so many more options with electric karts...

you could get hella crazy with it and build an app that would let people "tweak" their karts prior to a race. via terminals or smart phones.

give each person XXX amount of points they can use then they can choose how to split them up between acceleration and max speed. so you can "tune" the kart to your liking before a race, less grunt out of the corners, more top end or vice versa. would add a fun customizing need for speed type aspect (hate it all you want, its obviously popular based on the video games!)

could also give the karts a "nos" button which would just give the kart a 3 second jolt of power for the long back straight away.

obviously for league racing and other competitive type events everybody would have to or would elect to run the same exact settings to make it fair but the gimmicky side of it might draw in people that otherwise wouldn't be interested.

also so much fun things to do with electronics! at work we have a night vision system with I/R leds where it pulses the leds above their supposed max but it does it quickly so that for micro seconds they are much brighter than they ever should be, the camera which works with them ties into the pulse width of the led's and then syncs its frame rate with the led so that it records a frame at each pulse.

it does it faster than our eyes can detect so it looks like smooth fluid video but with far greater brightness than we could achieve by driving the LED's at a constant current.

would be easier but I see a couple dis-advantages to that as well.
1) with electronic karts you can infinitely control the power/accel of the karts so you might as well make use of it.
2) sandbagging, sneeze weighs 200lb I weigh 180. sneeze could pass for 220 if he wanted to (for sake of getting more power out of his kart) whereas I'd be lucky to pass for 170lb so lie about your weight get a faster kart.
3) some people would be uncomfortable sharing their weight, especially womenz. Not all people obviously but some would and you dont want to make it awkward otherwise people wont want to come back.

there are ways around the issues of course. for 2) just have a scale and people weigh in then you enter it into the kart and it adjusts power accordingly but then that could potentially lead to 3)

thats why I like the kart itself being able to automatically adjust, but then again it would also depend on cost. if it takes $2500 to make the kart a smart kart then forget about it. but if it was $300-400 and you could then brag/claim on brochures and advertising that the karts automatically adjust to the driver based on weight/experience then I know that makes them more appealing to me to want to come race

You can build a speed control for $300... I can design it.
