time for....

TIMMAY'S CRAZY IDEA EMPORIUM!!!

today's crazy idea is... interesting.

take four of these:
http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10917 (or something similar maybe a vibration sensor?)

attach them to a desk (one per corner, maybe more in certain areas)

attach them to a microcontroller...

have the microcontroller use the levels output by the transducer/sensor to "triangulate" the location of the tapping (like when you tap your nail on your desk)

use that x/y data to trigger mouse clicks or activate "virtual buttons" that could be painted onto the desk or something.

and you'd have a gesture to start the system (so your bored finger drumming doesn't piss it off)

anyone following me? turning your desk into a giant touch interface? cool? dumb? useless?

Would be hard to touch the right spots I think, since you aren't touching what is on the screen, just your desk.

well right but what if it wasn't a touchpad so much as a few touch sensitive "buttons"

like you sit at your desk and have nice big vol + vol - next track and pause buttons...

so you're working on homework or whatever and listening to music on your computer or whatever and you wanna skip the song...

you tap twice quickly (to activate the system) then tap the big next track button that's on your desk (and easy to find)

useful? a waste?

was just an idea. thanks for the feedback!

I almost think it'd be cooler as a remote for say your tv. Where you don't need the remote you can turn it on/off, volume etc, from the coffee table.

so....something similar to a microsoft surface but way cheaper and less advanced? I can dig it but I dont feel how your doing it is too useful......

I'd prefer to have a large say 3'x3' (or approx the entire right side of my desk) be a touch surface.....think the apple touchpad or macbook touchpad but on a much larger scale...something like that with multi touch capabilities.

then build in a gesture command similar to the dolphin browser for android.

at this point I'm thinking only solidworks but that'd be so useful!

swipe to the side to go to a different part swipe up to go back to the desktop, swipe the letter N to open a new model S to save etc etc. user configurable of course. 2 fingers to manipulate and rotate parts/models

essentially I want you to scale this up 10-15 times:

add the functions that this has (maybe put 10-15 simulated led "buttons" at the top so you can have hot keys as well as gestures.

and add in the dolphin browser gesture stuff.....

if you could come up with something like that I know for a fact my work would buy at least half a dozen....and I think you'd have a marketable product.

seems a lot of new tvs are coming with the ability to use your phone as a touchscreen remote.....I think having the coffee table do it as well would be redundant.

Kyle a sensor through ford is $100. both my lights were on list week. my new work place disconnected the wiring and sensor, connected it bk together and they now work again. The garage that replaced my engine messed the wiring up.
