How change ATX fluid at 30K
Here is an easy way to change your ATX fluid. My 2.3L 04 has 7 Quart capacity see manual. So I bought 9 quarts of Mercon V. Make sure you get Mercon V.
On the drivers side front is oil cooler sandwiched between radiator and AC condenser. The input/output lines route from bottom area next to the horn back to the ATX. The lower hose is the one to disconnect. It has a spring type hose clamp. Squeeze and move down hose toward the tranny. Slide it back most of the way down hose, that way it won't get in the way. Twist the hose and break it loose from the hose barb on the cooler. The barb on cooler line is large, and cooler line is Alumium so it not too strong and will bend if you just yank on it. I took a piece of broom handle and slide it up from the front side of the lower radiator bracket and hooked it behind the 90 degree bend the hose barb makes coming out of the cooler. This gives it support so that when you pull on the hose to remove it, it won't bend. I used a pair of large pliers to grap the hose, and used the rear side of the radiator bracket as fulcum to get some leverage to pull the hose from the barb. Go easy and wiggle and it will slide off.
Put a piece of 3/8 hose over the cooler barb and into a gallon water jug. Start end and let idle about 3 quarts will come out. When it stops coming out shut off engine. Take your partial filled jug and use it as measure and fill the second jug to the same level with new fluid. Pour that amount down the dip stick pipe. It will fill fast as the disconnect hose acts as a vent pipe. You want to do this three times. Will run about 8.5 quarts through this way. And you will have flushed the cooler also.
Put the hose back on, run the engine through gears. Let it sit and idle while you add a little and get the level right. I didn't dump all of the third batch in because I didn't want to over fill and have to take the hose back off. ABout 45 minutes all total. Take it for a test drive and inspect for leaks.
