Question Power Point Fuse Keeps Blowing!!!

Hey all...

Got one for you... A couple of weeks ago I started using a GPS unit in my hatch that plugs into the cigarette socket. No problems until a couple of days ago. It seems that it stopped working and I checked the fuse for the power point (cigg socket) and it was indeed blown (yellow 20amp). Changed it out with a new one, and to my surprise, upon plugging the new in, it sparked and blew upon touching the metal contacts that it slides into. Tried another one and same thing happened. Waited till the next day, plugged another fuse in and it was fine. Drove that day and my cell phone charger stopped charging. Yes, the damn fuse again. I don't know if I should take this down to Ford and have them check it out or if it's a simpler problem than that. Either way, I'm very frustrated about this issue. If anybody can bail me out here, please do....and thanks in advance.

~Dario

Do you have warranty left on the car? Strange that it's blowing fuses here and there. Usually means you have a short somewhere if it happens 'sometimes' and 'sometimes not'......

Yes, I have a warranty still left. I don't know what it could be. Maybe I'll just take it to Ford and see what the deal is....

Look into the power point and see ig there's anything in there shorting it out.

Likely one of two things: (1) a bad socket where the insulation betwen the center terminal and the outside of the case has gone bad, or (2) problem with the power lead going to the socket, perhaps touching a metal support edge or something and wearning through the insulation, shorting the wire.

But in any case, if it's under warranty, the dealer is the place to go.

That said, I just had the dealer adjust the parking brake free-play at 15,000 miles, since it was excessive. They took ALL the free play out and, when I got home, it was clear the rear brake shoes were dragging as a result (rear drums were much hotter than normal and I could tell there was no free play when putting the brake on). So in the end, I adjusted it myself anyway.
