Having trouble with serpentine belt size for a 2002 Focus SE Wagon

Hello all. I am having trouble with the size of the serpentine belt. I drive a 2002 Ford Focus SE Wagon. It's the 3 engine with AC. I replaced the belt tensioner and the belt. When I went to put the belt on (77.5 inches) it was too short. Went back to the parts store and exhanged for a longer belt (83.5 inches I believe) the belt is too long now. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I've downloaded the belt diagram to make sure I was running it right. Has anyone run into this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

LOL, the belts get too long or too short at only .75 inch. You went like 10X past that.

Most think the book stated length is too short, not understanding that the tensioner must collapse pretty much 100% of the way to give you max belt life. It's SUPPOSED to appear to be too short.

Everything on a car is a pain until you do it once or twice. With the new tensioner you probably just had trouble getting it loose enough.

You feel like an idiot if you can't do simple things, but if you have never done it and have never seen it done then how are you supposed to know? Just takes thinking and time. Like different style clamps for windshield wipers come in all the time, and I get mad at myself because they are just wipers and it makes me feel stupid because it's just a windshield wiper lol

X2. If you give up over and over without going further..............well, it's exactly what the shops want.
