intermittent start issue on 2001 ford zx3 hatchback

hey there everyone,

so, my car just died in the gas station. a nearby person helped me jump the car. the lights did not come on while connected to the other vehicle. after the person drove away, the lights came back on, but the whole car would die. another nearby person had a jump box. he connected it for five minutes but it did nothing. finally, the lights and radio once again came back ok. tried starting but nothing. he suggested it might be the starter. so i took a strong stick/pole i had and hit what i thought was the starter. i did this once a nissan and it worked. i'm not sure if i hit the alternator or the starter, but the car did start up one more time. i got home, parked, turned off and could not turn back on.

how can i tell if its the starter, alternator or some kind of fuse?? the battery only about a year old. we touched jumper cables and they made a little spark, although this does not tell me the charge level of the battery, it suggested it had some power. my thinking is, if i take the battery itself to kragen or some auto parts store and they say the battery is dead, its most likely the alternator. if they say the battery has a good charge, my guess is that it would be starter. is this a good line of thinking?

Sounds like a dead battery for sure.

Needs charging & testing.

a multi-meter test suggested the battery was good as i got 12.8v with the car off and 15.15v max with the car on and the foot on the pedal (i attached an image of the 15.15)...thankfully, the car did turn back on once with the multi-meter connected. however, after turning it off, i tried turning it back on and the dashboard lights came on and the car made multiple click sounds. is it safe to say its most likely a starter issue? should i still replace the start relay and fuse in the steering wheel and fuse box, respectively?

update: you can see the issue of not starting here:

update: i gave the starter a few whacks with a heavy flathead screwdriver. the car turned on 3 times in a row then did not the 4th time.

i came back in an hour, gave it another whack and it turned on. suffice to say, its probably the starter solenoid.
