ZX3 hatch opens when pressing brake petal

This is truely bizzare, and has happened several times in the past few weeks.

I was out shopping this weekend & after placing items in the hatch I got in turned on the car and pressed down the brake to shift into drive (auto tranny). Just as I press down the brake I hear the rear hatch automatically release. I get out close the hatch get back in & begin to drive again. As soon as I press the brake down the hatch releases. This happens 2 or 3 more times until finally it stays closed & we drive home. The next morning we are going out to run errands, same thing happens after a few attempts at keeping the hatch closed I decide to try & get above 5 MPH so the auto doorlocks engage & hopefully the rear latch won't pop anymore. I press the brake, start the car, pull up the ebrake, shift into neutral and then go close the hatch. I get back in shift the car into drive, remove the ebrake & start going. I get above the 5 MPH hear the doors lock & try pressing the brake. As soon as I touch the brake the hatch pops.

I don't see any reason why the brake would be in any way connected to the hatch, and it was my impression that the hatch would not release once the car was in motion for safety purposes.

This has been an intermitten problem and has only happened 3 times now, but on the third time I just removed the interior cover from the hatch & unplugged the powerlock module. Before doing this I checked the manual & saw no mention of a fuse that connected power locks or the hatch.

I searched google & here & couldn't find anything similar.

So I am wondering if anyone here has any suggestions. The car is out of warranty.

Thanks
Brian

Possibilities to consider:

1) The wires for the brake lights and the hatch release probably run in the same wire harrness from the front of the car to the back. The two could be shorting out to each other, most likely at any "rub points" where a sharp edge might have worn through the wiring harness.

2) If you have a weak battery, the voltage will drop when the brake lights go on. This voltage transition might be seen by the module as an "unlock" signal.

Finding a wiring diagram might give you some hints as to where there might be some "crosstalk" going on.

Penguin is on target. I'd definately check in the back gate for problems. Most electrical problems are at either end and not in the middle. OF course, now that I wrote that, your problem is going to be in the middle.. LOL

I hope not at least.. please check back with us and let us know if you figured it out without going to the dealer.

I hope it's not a bad module

That's real weird. I'd try those suggestions first. Also, I think the manual states that the hatch won't open if you're going over 20 or 25... I didn't think it was as low as 5.

I hope it's something simple for you, it's never done this before since you've owned it? If worse comes to worst I'd seek out a mechanic. Not necessarily at Ford if you know of another local one, they're usually cheaper and they can do a damn good job if they're a good place. But hopefully it's a DIY thing?!

Maybe its that safety lock thing for the hatch malfunctioning. I can hear mine engage almost as soon as I start moving from my parking spot. Maybe that's what is messing up.

sorry i can't help. but i think that this is f'n hilarious. i think a friend of yours is playing a trick on you. i've seen it done where they hooked up the horn to when you press the brake pedal so everytime you brake your horn goes off. look for some unsuspecting wire to your brake pedal dunno?

does the focus come w an internal hatch release? like for when ur kidnapped and they stuff u in the trunk so that u can open the hatch and wave at drivers behind u to let them know to call the cops?!?!

the reason i ask is cuz u said it happened after u were running errands...is it possible u accidentally lay something against it and a shift in pressure/weight caused it to release?

its a crazy longshot, but i thought itd toss it out there

Ummmm Grendel... couldn't someone just crawl out of the back of a ZX3 and unlock one of the front doors

LOL @ strange wire near brake switch

It could be worse... imagine if your ignition wires were crossed with the brake lights, and the car would only run if you had your foot on the brake.
