2001 Zx3 starts, then dies. Will continue if I give it gas.

Hey guys, I'm new here but I'm recently having and issue so I thought I would turn to you guys for some help. My 2001 zx3 has an issue where I will drive somewhere, do whatever I am doing, and come back to my car being unable to stay running. The car will start up, reach over 1000 Rpm then instead of dropping to its idle of around 600-800 it will just go down to nothing. I can keep the car running if I keep giving it gas, but after I lay off it will die again. This has happened twice and the first time I restarted it again twenty minutes later and it ran fine. The second time I came back the next day and it ran fine again. These two times have been about two weeks apart.

My first thought was fuel pump, but my roommates who know much more about cars think that it could be the engine running with too much gas that kind of drowns the engine. This kind of makes sense since I get awful gas mile for the most part (like 15-20 city) Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome!

Moved this to General Tech Chat, best for most repair questions. Zetec Performance is primarily for performance modification discussions and your issue doesn't sound like it's affected by any performance parts.

Vacuum leaks are the most common cause for what you mention, with the PCV hose to the intake being the most common place for an intermittent failure as it gets soft and collapses and or cracks.

If the car idles fine and SMOOTH other than you have to hold the throttle on to get your normal 750-800 rpm then look at TPS switch. Car will idle cold but once warm then does the flaw.

FYI, there is no TPS available for early ATX Focus zetec, you have to cobble up a solution, see the stickies. Yeah, well, I don't care what the parts guys told you, there is NONE. They sell you the wrong part and it gets worse.

Can be coking buildup around the butterfly edges too. Clean the TB.

Uh, we got a computer running fuel/air now, how does a car run rich nowadays? It makes ZERO sense until you bring in the operator. Awful mileage is from lack of maintenance or dead wore out engine.
