Airbag light

What is needed to read the airbag light on a 2007 Focus? Mine has been on since I bought it almost a year ago. I've seen threads on "clean this", "check that" but I'd prefer to read the code and address cause from the start. Changing things 1 piece at a time, that might not be broken, until the light stays off is what I'm trying to avoid.

Thanks,

Dealer or proper repair center can read it. None of the off the shelf ODBII scanners or part store scanners read airbag codes.

That being said, if you describe the light better, we might be able to help you diagnose it some.

The airbag system is constantly tested, checking itself. Most of the time, it will display the actual code via a series of blinking. Does it blink in a series of on and off at all? That is a code you can specifically search for.

Or does it just come on when you start the car, shut off shortly and then come back on and stay on? I actually had this one not long ago in my 2007 and this fixed me completely. I was looking into how to replace the actual clockspring when i found this video: https://youtu.be/b8jh1nYsWYY

Cost me nothing but a half hour of my time as i had everything already. (need a dumb 5.5mm socket and some dielectric grease only)

Interesting. I've seen threads saying to just unplug and replug to clean the contacts or something but didn't know it was a ford fix too. I've ignored the light for so long that I don't see it anymore but I'll make sure to look and see if it blinks. If I were say right now, id say it's just on the entire time; no blinks or anything. I'll look at it tonight.

Ok I took the car out and paid attention. Air bag light comes on with all the others on start-up, goes off for about a second and then comes, and stays, on.

Thats what mine did, the YT video's solution fixed it. I know you said you didnt want to try fixing things that might be it vs finding out what it is exactly but this isnt a time consuming or expensive solution. If you are comfortable removing your air bag (follow the video for tips) then it is very doable. You just need dielectric grease and 5.5mm socket

I'm more apt to try a "free" fix on a hunch. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Just gotta find grease I know I have somewhere and hope i have a 5.5mm (stupid size). Guess I should have said that I don't want to throw parts at it.

Thanks for the tip,

It's a dumb size socket, i only have it from when i swapped to an SVT steering wheel...had to buy it just for that. Think the local part store had it, i bought as a single piece.

airbag codes are usually pretty cut and dry, id take it to a shop somewhere and have them read it, maybe give them ten bucks to do it. has the car ever been in a wreck? i bought mine and it has a salvage title and i had to replace and reprogram the RCM and replace the drivers side seatbelt pre-tensioner. tensioner was $70 from ford with my employee discount and i picked up an RCM from a pic-a-part for $5 and reprogrammed it myself.

and blinking-code MILs havent really been a thing since OBD1

Clean carfax but that don't mean anything; my sister crashed an Acura and it never showed up on the carfax report. Title is clean as well. I'll try the plug thing first, maybe this weekend and proceed from there. Friends have a snap on scanner that looks expensive and might read the codes.

Will an SCT programmer read them? I have one that's married to a truck that's long gone....
