What kind of oil does the 2012 SE take?

My wife went to Midas today with a $20 coupon and they refused to use conventional oil. They said the car has to have synthetic. I told her there's no turbo or supercharger and we've been using conventional so that's what they needed to use. They refused saying it'd destroy the engine. I looked in the book and it says 5w-20, but doesn't specify synthetic. In the back of the manual it does say synthetic or synthetic blend and makes no mention of conventional. So now I'm confused. If it's really synthetic I'll just do it myself since it's like $20 between oil and filter, and I have jack stands, sometimes I just don't feel like jacking up the car, though. I've been using conventional.

Side note, I had a 2008 Subaru WRX which DID require synthetic because of the turbo. I never once used synthetic in that car and when I sold it a few years ago with 80,000 miles on it the turbo worked fine. I had it checked several times. Subaru told me it should get it but as long as you did the oil changes regularly you could get away with conventional. I also have a 2009 Rav4 V6 which I do use synthetic on because it's got 110,000 miles and because it's fairly easy to get under it without jacking it up.

I've used nothing but the cheapest conventional oil on my 2012 with no issues.

Change it regularly and move on. Midas just wanted more profit.

It originally came w/ a 5w/20 synblend. You can use a dino oil or a synblend or full synthetic such as Mobil1.

I've only used the synthetic blend for the 99K miles on my 2011. On my 2014 focus and my wife's Taurus same thing. Syn. Blend is fine. they just wanted to charge more for full synthetic oil change

ALL of the car makers have pretty much been switching to synthetic in the last few years. I looked up the oil types required all day long when I was in parts.

If that is a direct injection engine I would use what they tell you to...........
