2005 w/ 2L Duratec Leaking ATF

This is my sister's car 200 miles away, so like you, I'm diagnosing from just this pic. As you can see, ATF fluid is leaking from what appears to be just under the bumper on the driver side. I'm guessing that there's a cooler over there and either a line to it is leaking or the core itself. Yes, no, maybe???

Moved to General Tech Chat.

Likely, as there are lines from the trans to a cooler pipe that runs across the front of the radiator area.

The line could simply be loose, or it could be evidence of a bad repair. We have a thread about how to drain the fluid using those lines and turning the motor over without starting it. As long as the radiator- which contains the trans cooler- isn't damaged, I'd recommend new lines, AT filter and partial fluid change. No special additives needed unless she put stop-leak in it.

Until you leave the land of ultravague nothing really we can say, depends on the connector used there often as to what to do.

Could be intercooler leak meaning radiator too, can't tell until you get more there.

Some pics of the bottom side. The fans give a reference point if you're lost. Any best guesses where the leak might be originating?

Yep, it looks like the trans cooler line to me. If that one busts while the engine is running, she will drain 100% of her fluid in literally seconds. Another fear is that AT fluid is the only fluid I've ever had cause me an engine fire. That was with older fluids, so I don't know if MerconV is similar enough to be easily flammable.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. From what I'm reading, these lines use snap-fit connectors, yes? Best guess is that it's probably an o-ring seal that has failed, yes? The car is in the rust belt, but it seems unlikely (not impossible) that the line would have rusted all the way through.
