07 focus- adjusting shift selector cable - releasing lock tab

Any technique to releasing the lock tab on the selector cable on a 07 Focus manual tranny? I see the square orange button on the cable but a bit leery of prying on things...the factory manual just says "release it the lock tab....."

Just pry on either side of it?

I got it..found an earlier thread by Matt..it was, like he said, a real bear to get off. Hit it with penetrating fluid and had to unhook it at the lever the twist it around for a good pry. Used a huge screwdriver and after much pushing from the back it unclipped. Looks like the threaded rod it locks it fairly rusty.

Reset the cable as per Ford 2007 Focus factory manual but to no avail. Car shifts easily into all gears with engine off, but start it and can't get it into any gear. I'm not sure clutch is bad tho..when I could get it into gear I could stall the car out easily in 2nd or higher gears and it did not appear to slip. Maybe there is some residual drag on the clutch that is turning the shaft slightly in neutral?

The clutch pedal does not appear to have the same "snap" in this one that my other identical 07 wagon does. Just feels a bit softer. So time to replace the clutch? Master does not appear to be leaking and resevoir is full. I'm at a bit of a loss for any other options...

Sounds like there could be some serious clutch drag as you're guessing.

A surprising number of these have clutches that come apart to have fragments of lining material jam up to prevent full release BEFORE wearing to where they won't grab.

Couple quick checks for that, like pushing the pedal down in gear and seeing if it will roll engine off (slight hill or push) - secondly if you have safe room to try it you could attempt a start in gear, pedal down, and see if it tries to move (be ready to turn it off right away, might not shift into neutral easily).

Well..a mechanic buddy just dropped by to take a peek, he got in the car and it shifted fine!!..I got a couple of quizzical stares....LOL.

He tested the clutch and declared it great as well. I don't know what happened but my wife and I both had the same issue with the car over the last two weeks..we could not get it into gear without great difficulty..

Odd stuff. I guess I will wait to see if it happens again...

Don't write yourselves off as wackos yet, the scenario I mentioned can also clear up if it's relatively minor and the small piece of material jamming up the clutch is thrown free.
