Crank, no start!

Hey everyone! I'm driving myself crazy. I have a 2000 Zxs 5sp. Last Wednesday after work I started leaving work. I noticed a serious lack of power, but rpms were normal and when I reached 3rd gear everything resumed to what I thought was normal. Then it stalled at a stop light, which I pushed it into a gas station and was able to get it to start and I returned on my way home. The very next morning is when the crank, no start happened. I hooked up the computer and ran my codes and only 2 codes came up. Mass Air Flow(MAF) and Throttle body sensor in low range(which I have no clue what that means). Needless to say, I bought the proper cleaner for both, the MAF and the throttle body. Nothing. I bought a MAF sensor, still nothing. I have spark, it cranks so I'm assuming that its not an emissions issue, so that leaves fuel system I'm assuming. Fuel pump turns on, and when cranking I smell gas from the tailpipe.

Please anyone have any idea's? I'm planning on changing the fuel filter tomorrow too.

Moved to General Tech Chat.

Do check basics like whether the cams are turning (cam belt OK?).

I'm not extremely mechanically knowledgeable, so where would I see that at?

I have been all over the internet and YouTube trying to pinpoint something, and everything has come up just costing me more money.

I'm figuring you've got a ZX5 with a zetec engine, you could see one cam through the oil fill without removing the plastic cover over the belt/sprockets at the end of the engine.

(don't peek too close, safety glasses good as some oil can spray if it runs)

Most here emphasize trying to figure it out before throwing parts/$ at it.

Spark/Fuel/Compression/Timing is the old list of what you need to make it run. Still valid with every engine, no matter how simple or complex.

If it is turning, any other suggestions? Anything is better than nothing! Its my daily driver and its taken us down to 1 car. And if it isn't turning, is it pricey to fix?

Added the basic list while you were typing to the last response.

Cam belt isn't ridiculous if you can do it yourself, does need special tools & a full kit with tensioner & idler pulley at a minimum.

Don't ignore the simple of course, intake tube falls of & it won't run. Exact codes might mean something, you can get odd meaningless ones at times when one quits as well.

Always like to get to basics myself, looking at spark plugs can often lend a clue when you check closer for spark.

This is a current thread with an almost identical description, one reason I mentioned that possibility (timing belt):2001 Ford Focus , (Zetec) lost ability to accelerate. Afterwards would not start.

I'll check over several things tomorrow after work. A more in-depth look at things. With as little out of pocket expenses. It's either a timing issue or fuel related issue. That's all I can think of.
