You need to already have 2 programmed ones. So if the cut key is a third you're cool, if not you need to make a trip to a dealer. It's explained in that FocusHacks how-to.

Hmm, the how-to won't work then.

Is it a PATS-chipped key you got cut? (I'm assuming so). I mean, unprogrammed it'll still open the doors and trunk, just won't let the ignition turn over... looks like you need a dealer visit for that.

If you have only one key, the Focus' computer must be reprogrammed to accept the new key. What happens is the old keys are erased and whatever keys that you have are programmed into the car's computer. If you ever find the missing key, you can reprogram it following the procedure in the manual (also listed in the how-to section). Be warned, if you lose all of your keys, you will have to tow the car in, purchase two new keys, and have the computer reprogrammed. I am amazed that most sales people don't know or bother to explain all of this to people when they purchase the vehicle.

Sorry about the lengthy post!
