Oil change notification 2013 SE

Ok, so last time I went to dealer to have my oil changed they forgot to reset my light and just had me do the brake/gas pedal reset. I'm supposed to get it changed every 5k miles and it's due, however I have yet to get the notification to pop up on the dash. Any ideas? Is it set to a mileage by default or did it somehow get turned off altogether?

Silly question maybe, but if I'm going to move forward into a generation of cars that tells me whenever I need to do the simplest of tasks I would like to know that it's correct.

From your Owner Guide, page 322:

Scheduled Maintenance

NORMAL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND LOG

Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor®

Your vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor® that
determines when the engine oil needs to be changed based on how your
vehicle is used.
By using several important factors in its calculations, the
monitor helps reduce the cost of owning your vehicle and reduce
environmental waste at the same time. This means you won’t have to
remember to change the oil on a mileage-based schedule; the vehicle lets
you know when an oil change is due by displaying ENGINE OIL
CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED in the information display.
The following table is intended to provide examples of vehicle use and
its impact on engine oil change intervals; it is provided as a guideline
only. Actual engine oil change intervals depend on several factors and
generally decrease with severity of use.

When to expect the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message

Normal
7500-10000 mi
(12000-16000 km)
  • – Normal commuting with highway driving
  • – No, or moderate, load or towing
  • – Flat to moderately hilly roads
  • – No extended idling

Severe
5000-7499
(8000-11999)
  • – Moderate to heavy load or towing
  • – Mountainous or off-road conditions
  • – Extended idling
  • – Extended hot or cold operation

Extreme
3000-4999
(4000-7999)
  • – Maximum load or towing
  • – Extreme hot or cold operation

I hope this helps!

Meagan

Meagan covered the details of how that light system works well, hope that explains it better for you.

IF you didn't reset until a long time/miles after your last change, the next should be done on the "old fashioned" mileage system where you take it in at a certain mileage.

This is because the "system" assumes a fresh oil change was done at the time of the reset.

Ok thanks!
I've put over 10k miles on the car since I got it in October and last had it changed in January. I drive at a minimum of 500 miles per week, so I'll keep an eye out. The dealer told me 5k miles between changes and they were supposed to have setup my schedule according to my mileage and I haven't received an appt reminder in the mail yet.
