MANUFACTURER’S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE The manufacturer recommends that the timing belt be in- spected at 120,000 miles. Replace, if necessary.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT Removal (Escort & Tracer) –

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Place cylinder No. 1 to TDC of compression stroke. Re- move accessory drive belt and tensioner. Remove timing belt cover. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right hand splash guard. Remove crankshaft pulley. Align timing marks. See Fig. 1.

2) Loosen timing belt tensioner. Using an 8 mm hex wrench, turn tensioner 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Insert 1/8 drill bit to lock tensioner in place. See Fig. 2. If reusing old belt, mark belt with arrow to indicate original direction of rotation. Re- move timing belt.

Installation (Escort & Tracer) –

1) Ensure timing marks are still aligned. Install timing belt. If reusing old belt, ensure it is installed in original direction of rotation.

2) Remove drill bit and tighten tensioner bolt. Rotate crank- shaft clockwise 2 revolutions. Recheck timing mark alignment. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Removal (Focus) –

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. De- tach coolant expansion tank and set to one side. Remove power steering fluid reservoir from shock tower and set aside with hoses attached.

2) Turn serpentine belt tensioner clockwise to relieve tension and remove serpentine drive belt. Raise and support vehicle. Remove the lower drive belt cover.

3) Remove the crankshaft pulley and vibration damper. Lower vehicle. Noting position for reassembly reference, disconnect spark plug secondary cables from spark plugs.

4) Remove spark plugs. Place jack under engine to support weight. Remove front engine mount and upper timing belt cover from timing belt end of engine. Remove center timing belt cover. Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine.

5) Turn the crankshaft so that timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 1. Loosen timing belt tensioner. Using an 8 mm hex wrench, turn tensioner 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Insert 1/8 drill bit to lock tensioner in place. See Fig. 2. If reusing old belt, mark belt with arrow to indicate original direction of rotation. Remove timing belt.

Installation (Focus) –

1) Ensure timing marks are still aligned. Install timing belt in a counterclockwise direction start- ing at crankshaft sprocket. Keep slack out of belt span from crankshaft to camshaft sprocket. If reusing old belt, ensure it is installed in original direction of rotation.

2) Remove drill bit and tighten tensioner bolt. Rotate crank- shaft clockwise 2 revolutions. Recheck timing mark alignment. If not correct, readjust timing belt.

3) Install engine mount bracket and upper timing belt cover to engine. Install lower timing belt cover. Install engine mount to engine and frame. Remove jack from under engine.

4) Install spark plugs and secondary cables. Raise vehicle. Install crankshaft pulley and vibration damper. Tighten center bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

5) Install lower drive belt cover. Lower vehicle. Install serpen- tine drive belt. Install power steering fluid reservoir and cool- ant expansion tank. Connect negative battery cable. TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS Application Ft.

MANUFACTURER’S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE For 2000-98 model years, the manufacturer recommends the belt be inspected every 120,000 miles. Replace, if necessary. For 2001 model year, the manufacturer recommends the belt be replaced every 120,000 miles.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshafts with timing belt removed, damage to valve/piston may result.

Removal (Contour, Cougar & Mystique) –

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove engine splash shield from right wheelwell. Remove engine undercover, if equipped.

2) Loosen, but do not remove, water pump pulley bolts. Turn serpentine drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove ser- pentine drive belt. If belt is to be reused, mark belt with arrow to indicate direction of rotation.

3) Remove water pump pulley. Remove serpentine belt idler pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley center bolt and remove pulley.

4) Remove lower timing belt cover. Working from under ve- hicle, loosen center bolt of left-hand and right-hand engine support insulators 2 turns. DO NOT remove center bolts.

5) Lower vehicle. Remove coolant reservoir tank with hoses attached, and set aside. Disconnect cruise control cable (if equipped) from coolant reservoir.

6) Position floor jack under engine. Raise engine slightly to release pressure from mounting insulator on front of engine. Marking installed position for installation reference, remove engine front support insulator from timing belt end of engine.

7) Remove power steering pressure hose bracket from en- gine lifting eye, and position aside. Remove upper and center timing belt covers. NOTE: Spark plug removal is necessary for final timing adjustment.

Remove top engine appearance cover from between valve covers. Remove secondary wires from spark plugs. Working from the outer ends to the center, loosen valve cover bolts. Remove valve cover. Remove spark plugs.

9) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley. Rotate crankshaft to align timing mark on block with larger notch on pulley. See Fig. 1. Cylinders No. 1 and No. 4 are at TDC when crankshaft pulley Woodruff key points straight up.

10) Loosen timing belt tensioner center attaching bolt about 4 turns. Position tensioner locating tab at approximately the 4 o’clock position. See Fig. 4. Line up hex key slot in tensioner adjusting washer with pointer that is located behind pulley. See Fig. 4. CAUTION: To achieve proper tension when installing timing belt, camshaft sprocket bolts must be loose enough to allow sprockets to turn freely on the camshafts.

11) Remove plug from center of exhaust camshaft pulley. Hold exhaust camshaft with open end wrench on hex portion of camshaft. See Fig. 3. Loosen, but do not remove, exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt. Loosen, but do not remove, intake camshaft sprocket bolt.

12) If reusing timing belt, mark direction of rotation before removal. Remove timing belt.

13) To lock crankshaft in correct position, remove plug from lower, left part of engine block. See Fig. 1.

14) Rotate crankshaft to a few degrees before TDC position. Install locking Crankshaft Position Timing Peg (T97P-6000- A) into plug hole. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to lock crank- shaft against timing peg.

Removal (Escort) –

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove engine splash shield from right wheelwell.

2) Disconnect HO2S electrical connectors. Unbolt catalytic converter from exhaust manifold and from muffler inlet pipe. Remove crossmember bolts and crossmember. Remove cata- lytic converter bracket bolts. Remove catalytic converter.

3) Lower vehicle. Remove center trim cover from valve cover. Noting installed position for installation reference, disconnect spark plug wires. Remove spark plugs. Remove valve cover bolts (10). Remove valve cover.

4) Loosen, but do not remove, water pump pulley bolts. Turn serpentine drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove ser- pentine drive belt. If belt is to be reused, mark belt with arrow to indicate direction of rotation.

5) Remove water pump pulley. Remove serpentine belt idler pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley center bolt and pulley. 6) Remove lower timing belt cover. Lower vehicle. Position floor jack under engine. Raise engine slightly to release pres- sure from mounting insulator on front of engine. Marking in- stalled position for installation reference, remove engine front support insulator.

7) Remove upper and center timing belt covers.

Temporarily install crankshaft pulley. Rotate crankshaft to align timing mark on block with larger notch on pulley. See Fig. 1. To lock crankshaft in correct position, remove plug from lower, left part of engine block. See Fig.
1. Rotate crankshaft to a few de- grees before TDC position. Install locking Crankshaft Position Timing Peg (T97P-6000-A) into plug hole. Rotate crankshaft clock- wise to lock crankshaft against timing peg.

Removal (Focus) –

1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove serpentine belt cover from under vehicle.

2) Loosen, but do not remove, water pump pulley bolts. Turn serpentine drive belt tensioner clockwise. If serpentine drive belt is to be reused, mark belt with arrow to indicate rotation direction. Remove serpentine drive belt.

3) Remove water pump pulley. Remove serpentine belt idler pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley center bolt and remove pulley.

4) Remove lower timing belt cover. Lower vehicle. Remove cool- ant expansion tank and set aside. Remove power steering res- ervoir from shock tower and set aside with hoses attached.

5) Position floor jack under engine. Raise engine slightly to release pressure from mounting insulator on front of engine. Marking installed position for installation reference, remove engine front support insulator from timing belt end of engine.

6) Remove upper and center timing belt covers. Remove top engine appearance cover from between valve covers. Work- ing from the outer ends to the center, loosen valve cover bolts. Remove valve cover. Remove secondary wires and spark plugs. Remove PCV hose.

7) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley. Rotate crankshaft to align timing mark on block with larger notch on pulley. See Fig. 1. To lock crankshaft in correct position, remove plug from lower, left part of engine block. See Fig. 1. Rotate crankshaft to a few de- grees before TDC position. Install locking Crankshaft Position Timing Peg (T97P-6000-A) into plug hole. Rotate crankshaft clock- wise to lock crankshaft against timing peg.

9) Holding exhaust camshaft stationary with Holding Tool (303-098) or spanner wrench, loosen, but do not remove, ex- haust camshaft sprocket bolt. Holding intake camshaft sprocket stationary, loosen, but do not remove, intake cam- shaft sprocket bolt.

10) If reusing timing belt, mark direction of rotation before removal. Remove timing belt.

Installation (All Models) –

1) Ensure crankshaft pulley tim- ing marks are still aligned and Crankshaft Position Timing Peg (T97P-6000-A) is still in place. See Fig 1. Ensure crank- shaft remains resting against timing peg during timing belt installation.

2) Position cylinder No. 4 to “valves overlap” position. Install Camshaft Alignment Tool (T94P-6256-CH) or equivalent to align camshafts. See Fig. 3. Camshafts may be turned slightly with open end wrench, in normal direction of rotation, to install tool in slots on camshafts at rear of engine. CAUTION: Timing belt tensioner locating tab should NOT be hooked in sheet metal cover during timing belt installation. See Fig. 4.

3) Tensioner locating tab should be at approximately the 4 o’clock position. See Fig. 4. Line up hex key slot in tensioner adjusting washer with pointer that is located behind pulley. See Fig. 4.

4) Starting from crankshaft pulley, install timing belt on sprock- ets in counterclockwise direction. Remove all slack from belt during installation. CAUTION: Incorrect timing belt tension will cause incorrect valve timing.

5) To tension the timing belt, rotate timing belt tensioner tab counterclockwise and insert tab into slot in rear cover. Posi- tion hex key slot in tensioner adjusting washer to the 4 o’clock position. See Fig. 5.

6) Tighten attaching bolt enough to seat the tensioner firmly against rear timing cover, BUT still allow the tensioner adjust- ing washer to be rotated with a 6 mm hex key.

7) Working counterclockwise, tension the timing belt. Ensure all slack is removed from belt. Using a 6 mm hex key, rotate adjusting washer until notch in pointer is centered over index line on locating tab. See Fig. 6. Pointer will move clockwise during adjustment.

While holding adjusting washer in position so that it does not rotate, tighten tensioner center attaching bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). NOTE: DO NOT use Camshaft Alignment Tool (T94P-6256-CH) to hold camshafts stationary while tightening camshaft sprocket bolts.

9) On Focus models, hold intake camshaft sprocket station- ary, and tighten intake camshaft sprocket bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m). Hold exhaust camshaft stationary and tighten exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m).

10) On Escort ZX2, Contour, Cougar and Mystique, hold in- take camshaft with Holding Tool (303-098) or spanner wrench, and tighten camshaft sprocket bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m).

11) On Escort ZX2, Contour, Cougar and Mystique, hold ex- haust camshaft with open end wrench. Tighten exhaust cam- shaft sprocket bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 N.m). Final tighten exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt to 88 ft. lbs. (120 N.m).
12) On all models, remove camshaft alignment tool. Remove timing peg from side of engine block. FORD 2.0L 4-Cylinder – VIN 3, 1998-01 (Cont.)

13) Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions in normal direction of rota- tion. Align crankshaft pulley with timing mark. Install locking Crank- shaft Position Timing Peg (T97P-6000-A) into plug hole. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to lock crankshaft against timing peg.

14) Camshaft Alignment Tool (T94P-6256-CH) should slide into slots in rear of camshafts. If not, readjust camshaft pulley positions.

15) On all models except Focus, install NEW center plug into exhaust camshaft sprocket after all timing marks are aligned and belt is tensioned.

16) On all models, install valve covers. Install spark plugs and secondary wiring. Install appearance cover between valve covers. Connect solenoid valve electrical connector in appear- ance cover (if equipped) and press in rubber seal.

1 On Contour, Cougar, and Mystique, attach power steering pipe bracket to engine lifting eye. Install coolant reservoir tank. Raise and support vehicle. Verify that center bolt is centered in right-hand and left-hand lower engine support insulators. Tighten center bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFI- CATIONS.

19) On Escort, install catalytic converter and crossmember.

20) On all models, install lower timing belt cover. Install crank- shaft pulley and tighten bolt to specification. Install serpentine drive belt idler pulley. Install water pump pulley. Install serpen- tine drive belt.

21) Install engine splash shield and undercover (if equipped). Install right front wheel. Tighten lug nuts to specification.

22) When battery is disconnected, some abnormal driveability symptoms may occur until the PCM relearns its adaptive strat- egy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to complete a relearn cycle.

Go buy you a manual. It might even give you some pointers about how to do this without the special parts that hold the engine up after you remove the front mount. Plan your work, and make sure you have everything you need handy. When DIY or paying for a timing belt you should also replace the tensioner and water pump which are both housed under the timing cover. You will have to remove the motor's accessories to access the timing cover and the belt underneath.

A good mechanic can do it in a day (or less) and a novice with the right tools and nothing out of the ordinary happening can do it in a weekend easily.

^^ You should start your own thread instead of resurrecting an old one. People who have the answer might get confused.

I'd also strongly consider posting in the SPI performance- although this is tech related- you're likely to find a better and quicker answer in the SPI forum.

I thought I needed to adjust my timing because of a diagnosis a mechanic gave me. They thought it had jumped timing. This guide was very helpful for me to get up the nerves to dive into this.

After taking the top cover off and seeing the teeth on the belt were fine I figured it hadn't really jumped timing.

I saw the serpentine belt was cracked and needed replaced. Once I took the belt off I was able to check all the pulleys. The AC pulley was completely siezed up. That was what was causing my VERY slow labored cranking. I got a replacement from pick n pull, replaced the serpentine belt and it started right up.

While I was in there I replaced the shot motor mount as well. My car had been having very high vibration problems and I had even had a mechanic tell me the motor mount was fine. The rubber was completely separated and had no dampening at all. My car is running smoother than I ever remember it running. I sometimes even think it's died at stop lights or when I'm parking.

I also just recorded a new personal MPG record for my car @ 36.8 mpg. I still need to switch to synthetic oil and change my manual transmission fluid to something better. I don't think it's ever been changed.

that's good to hear. this is a pretty old thread, I think we should lock it now but glad to hear it worked out for you and welcome to FF :)
