Moved this to General Tech Chat for a better chance at answers.

Fewer UK members than North American, so model specific answers might take a bit.

Lack of cranking on a manual trans. model is often from a failure of the clutch safety switch. Look under the dash & find the switch triggered when the clutch is fully depressed. Unplug the two wire connector & 'Jump" it using a paper clip. If that bypass works, tape it over for a temp. fix & remember that it WILL crank in gear now. Neutral & clutch depressed is still the best starting method.

Cheers

Yeah that totally sounds like a clutch position switch. Look under the dash and it should be on top of the clutch pedal mechanism. You'll see it with a flashlight under the dash. It will have a 2 wire plug-in connector. If you can't see any mechanical reason- it's loose and not making contact or misaligned- then unplug the connector and bridge those 2 points with something like a paperclip or solid insulated wire. Be sure to tape it up with electrical tape so it won't short out or come loose. Now it should start easily, but it will start in gear!!

Or could just be a battery on last legs, will run but not much longer; diesel requires not as much power as gas engine cause no spark load. They also require overkill starting amp. The rest of electrics might work fine at this point.
