Temperature Gauge Issue

Hi....

I am a rookie-fanatic :) with a 2002 Focus Sedan, 123,000 miles, and my check engine light on. Went to Autozone, and they mentioned it might be a coolant related issue, or the temperature gauge. Coolant level is fine, but I am dealing with dropping temps. Is this critical? Whats the ballpark amount to fix/replace this? Thanks!

Welcome to FF!

Started a new thread for you, fresh one for each person with a problem works best and your car is quite different from a '12 model.

Which "code" might help, more importantly we need to know the engine type in the car. There is a thread at the top of this section with pictures to help you determine which you have.

Thermostat might be a good guess, but more info. will help. (engine type & exact symptoms)

Thanks!

Hi Sailor- its the SE; with the 2.0L engine. The temperature coolant I have noticed wont budge while driving it, and this was shortly before the engine light came on.

I drive her back and forth to work and its an hour drive each way... any tips also on increasing the fuel mileage? I am on top of tire rotations and oil changes, and maintenance also, but about to get the timing belt taken care of also.

Thanks for your reply!

Your Sedan Likely has the SPI engine, but it could also be the Zetec. The "Which engine do I Have" thread at the top of this page gives pictures & description you can use to tell us what's under the hood. They're BOTH 2.0 engines....

Now, I'm seeing dropping temp. as well as a gauge that won't budge while driving, plus a check engine light.

Does the gauge go down when shut off? Is it dropping while running but not moving? Can you give an idea where the needle points, both while driving and when it drops?

One thing you can do to check actual temp. is put the odometer in test mode when starting the car. Hold the reset button until started & the gauge goes to test instead of miles, then press the button repeatedly to scroll thru functions like RPM & Temp.. It will stay where you leave it until shut off again.

The actual code from autozone would also help.

Post back what you can, and folks will use that info. to try diagnosing your problem & give other suggestions. Post the code later when you can get it plz..

We try to help with our best guesses & suggestions, more info. makes that possible.

Thanks
