1" cubed filter below air filter?

What is the tiny 1" cubed filter-looking-thing below the air filter in the air filter box??? Mine is dark brown/black .. I assume it needs replaced with some frequency? Mine looks original. I'm the third owner; car has 130k miles.

no need to replace it. just a filter that catches any excess oil coming from the breather hose on the valve cover.

you can get it on rock auto for a dollar. so if your placing an order put it on there and have a few extra. if your motor is functioning correctly then you should rarely have to replace it.

Yes, and it can have a little oil in it and be fine. Take it and rinse off in fuel and throw it back in. Time to replace it when it begins to crumble into dust when squeezing it. I replace mine with simple home A/C window unit filter foam, cut a strip, roll it up like carpet till slightly too big and then squeeze it into the square hole to let it conform to shape.

It's the back end filter for the PCV system, when engine blowby overwhelms the PCV then it breathes there into the airbox.
