2002 focus wont start

My daughter was driving the car she had been driving for an hour and the car was running fine, she was approaching a red light when the car started to shake and when she stopped the car just shut off, and would not restart, it will crank but will not start.
we had the car towed home and here is what we have tried.
1. coil looked bad, burnt and cracked in several areas, so we replaced it , no change.
2. pulled all 4 plugs and tested, they all fired
3.there was compression from the cylinders, but not sure amount without a tester.
4.hooked up an over the counter computer, it showed no codes and everything working ok.
5.sprayed starter fluid, and still no change, cranks but wont start.
6.reset the fuel pump shut off.
7. removed valve cover, and timing belt looks intact.

We are running out of ideas, can anyone give us anything we could be missing.

did you try starting it while keeping the accelerator pedal slightly depressed? The warm-stall failure plagues older model year Focii like yours.

Is it an SPI- Split Port Injection written on the valve cover?

If so, go get you a compression tester, or rent a leak down tester kit. You might be able to tell something if you open the valve cover and look very closely at cyl #4. You could see deflection on the valve from not having a seat. If you're lucky, you didn't put a hole in the piston.

You have the Zetec. OK let's review engine basics - for fire, you need:

fuel
ignition
compression
correct timing

Ya checked out #1 with the starter fluid that should have got at least a fire in a few holes - but nothing.

Ya checked out spark and compression - a cold engine won't have a lot of compression - but it will have some. Any amount of compression and you should get fire in a few holes at least.

Ya DIDN'T check out timing. "timing belt LOOKED OK?" What kind of troubleshooting is that? Can you prove it didn't jump a tooth? Maybe the belt tensioner is bad.

Also, when you hooked up your engine scan tool, did you see data from the crank sensor? I would initially assume the sensor is OK since it is firing the spark plugs but I wouldn't rule it out.

was her fuel filter and/or pump ever replaced? those are also notorious problems on these older models. I'm assuming that when you turn the key to the last detente before starting, you hear the characteristic, momentary whine of the fuel pump from the back of the vehicle?

thanks everyone it was the timing belt, it was worn at the bottom and didnt see until we took it apart. I guess with 152k miles we were pretty lucky.
