Why I won’t let anyone else work on my cars

I just experienced another reason why I never let anyone else work on my cars!

I’m doing the drum brakes in my 2000 wagon. On removing the right side drum I see that the last idiot who put shoes on this thing lost the adjuster mechanism spring! Yeah that little “ball point” spring between the “cam” and the plate is missing!

Ford won’t sell just the 10 cent spring. They will only sell the whole adjuster mechanism, if they could even get one, and they want $64 for it!

Without this little spring the self adjuster will not work. Did anyone who converted to rear discs save their old drum bits & pieces?

Anybody know of a “ghetto” fix that would work?

My local Hdwe. Store has boxes of assorted types of springs - saved MY butt in the past...

Sometimes even find an EXACT match, when the engineers used an "off the shelf" piece in the design & it happens to be one common enough to be in the assortment.

It's set up like the pick a bolt area, organized in divided trays, not just a pick thru assortment.

P.S. - is it close enough for an ACTUAL "ball point" to work??

Hi Sailor!

Thanks for your suggestions and question. Unfortunately “ball point” springs are compression springs. This little spring is a tension spring. The “ball point” reference was just for relative size so as not to mislead a reader into thinking I was talking about the much larger shoe return springs.

I have a collection of springs but they are all too big. I think I’ll have to reinstall the drum without doing anything so I can drive to some hardware stores and hope to find some small tension spring that I can use. The hard part is that this little spring has a straight extension and a “z” bend that hooks it into the adjuster bar. Uncoiling, straightening and bending a little spring is asking for trouble. That level of stress and deformation will lead to rapid fatigue failure and pieces of hardened spring wire flopping around inside the drum.

The best solution would be to buy, beg, or steal the spring from someone who changed over to rear discs and kept the old drum parts.

Hear that, haven't had to do mine yet so i wasn't intimately familiar (grin)

Maybe an extended hook end will work? seen those in multiple sizes, as well as some small ones with straight ends to be bent to fit....

Hopefully someone from right around the corner will see this & have one to spare!

Well. as much as I hate having had to do this extra work, I put it back together and I'm off to hardware stores. There is a "Tractor Supply" near me and they have a big selection of bolts etc but something tells me that anything they do have will be too big
:(

As you said "Hopefully someone from right around the corner will see this & have one to spare!" I'll let you know what I find.

Yes they sell spring kits at most part stores. I always replace all the springs every time I do drum brakes. You may only do them a couple times when owning the car so it's good insurance. The old springs get corroded and stretched over time.

Well, thank you all for your suggestions. I will PM iminhell as requested. The spring kits available from various vendors are only the shoe retractor and mounting springs. They do not include the tiny springs for the automatic adjusters.
