Weird electrical problem

So I've spent all weekend rebuilding my SVT (2002). And when we were putting the battery in, I think my friend overcharged it with one of those battery chargers, so a bunch of sparks came out and all that good stuff.. Now when the car is off and the key is out, the oil light and the door open light are both very dimly on, when I put the key in, just the oil light is on, but this time it's bright. When I try to start it, nothing happens. At all. If anyone can help, please let me know. I'm dying to get my car running already.

It sounds more like you have some grounds connected to the positive. Even if you overcharge a battery, the most you'll get out of it is 12.6v. That won't damage anything in circuits that are designed to handle 14.9v and sometimes even a little higher without damage.

Look closely at what you have connected to your positive terminal. It should only be the cable going to the starter, the cable going to the alternator, and maybe a amplifier hot if you have had one installed aftermarket.

If you had the engine out, check your main ground to the engine/trans, and there should be 2 or 3 small supplemental grounds that go to the chassis and the under hood fuse/relay box. There should also be a ground strap (uninsulated woven copper shoelace) that goes from the firewall to the metal part of the intake manifold or cylinder head. I'm not sure where it is exactly on the SVT, but I know it exists because we had a guy whose whole electrical system was grounded through that strap until it burned through.

So, DJ, did you have your battery plugged in the whole time you were working on the Engine and waiting for the head to return?

Definitely check wiring and make sure you have everything wired right.

From your post, it definitely sounds like the battery is dead. But a bit surprising because your car didn't sit for very long at all. My battery sat in my car while I was waiting for parts for 2-3 months and the battery still had enough juice to power up after the rebuild and get it at least turned on.

If EVER a "lot of sparks" when hooking up battery, remove connection at once!

Something is backwards.

Hopefully a small ground wire, that burned it's connection while discharging battery so it's not "hooked up" any more...

Electronics can get toasted this way, battery fire can burn down the whole car! Need to be VERY careful when hooking up a battery! Any sign of something wrong, UNHOOK immediately!

Remove, charge, test battery OUTSIDE of car. Check over EVERYTHING. THEN carefully try hooking up again......

Okay I think the problem is the wiring on the alternator, OR the battery harnesses themselves(I had to replace one side via cutting the wire). So talking to Ray, I figured there should only be two wires on the alternator...I have three. So this is what I had plugged in:
Positive (I think)

Ground:

That I plugged into this:


and here is the culprit.. random wire that I don't think goes here, but also I don't know where to put it:



I could only take pictures of the tip on it. If anybody has any ideas, please let me know.

And the wire I'm talking about that I don't think goes there is the one right next to the ground. I'm assuming it's a positive wire that goes elsewhere...but where..

From the pictures it looks like you're hooking the ground to the alternator positive connection, and the "unknown" is the positive that goes there!

If that "Plus" is touching ground when a battery is hooked up, you'd get sparks for sure! And grounding the positive output won't work either.

Plz chk. close B4 a battery goes in, ohm meter to check that loose one goes to the battery, and the fusible link in that cable is still intact might be an idea.
